Explain how you're getting 400 HP out of a 305.

well i plan to get 10:1 compresion using aftermarket pistons, bore it out .60 over, .510/.510 cams, new rockerarms, new lifters, edlebrok air gap manifold, larger valves, port and polish the heads, maybe mill the heads, all new exhaust system, the right carb, and a few other add-ons. im also thinking about spraying it.

A good 650 or 700DP would probably be the best choice IMO. DP for all out, VS for daily driven naturally.

If you have a buddy with a 750 it would definately be worth your while to give that a shot as well. But the smaller cfm carbs will give better overall response given the smaller cubes.

If you get pistons for 10:1, then mill the heads, then spray it, you'll be looking for a 350 shortblock in short order.

Of course, boring a 305 .060"-over is the beginning of the wrong thinking. Quit wasting your time and money and start looking for the builder 350 shortblock now.

A 650 double pumper is the proper carb for 400 HP that is raced regularly.

DP = double pumper - I.E., mechanical secondary of the Holley or Demon variety (nobody else make a mechanical secondary carb).

VS = vacuum secondary of the Holley or Demon variety. Others make demand-based secondary carbs, but they aren't "vacuum secondary", technically. The Edelbrock Performer and quadrajet are examples of demand-based secondary carbs.

If you want to work with the block you have now, that's fine - that's what I'm doing.

But don't waste your money on machine shop labor, pistons, rings, bearings, etc., on a 305.

Waste of money. If you did all the same work to a 350 as a 305, you would make 15% more power. Why sacrifice 15% Horsepower to be different? Sounds kinda stupid to me.

Really all depends on what you want to do. If you want to get a full crate engine, anywhere from 1700-5000 dollars. I think a good way to go is the ZZ4 short block. It runs around 1500 bucks. Gets you the good forged crank and solid internals. Take your 305 heads, Port and polish have bigger valves installed. Install a healthy cam, and you would have a really nice running engine, and probably keep the whole thing under 26-2700 dollars. That is just one way. You could get a 350 core from a junkyard, take it to a machine shop and have it rebuilt. And then go from there. I just like the internals included with the ZZ4 shortblock myself.

hot,
is there some reason you're not considering a 383?

Forget that 305 block, go to the junk yard and get a 350 block, and work with that. You will be much happier when it is all said and done.
