I think that i have a problem with my carb. I have a 305 Q-jet. When i jump off the line its fine, but it seems when it hits second it bogs down huge. It stops speeding up and eventually just quits and slowls down to about 20. Also every once in a while i'll here the carb pop and car shuts off and dies. Im thinking it could be maybe the mixture because i put full 3" flowmasters on. Maybe its the timing. I dont know. Its gotten so bad that i raced my friends stock regular old 2002 sentra and he beat me. Anyone know what thell is going on?

i had a fuel delivery problem, would quit at 5000 rpm in first. pulled like a tractor in 2nd 3rd and 4th to 130. Once i went to FI it dissapeared. I would retrofit a late model tpi fuel pickup and pump in the tank then get the corresponding regulator. it won't happen ever again!!

I was gonna say fuel pressure, until I read that about the carb popping. That sounds like timing or maybe a plug wire on the wrong plug. May just need a good tune-up.

Have you tried looking at your plug wires at night with the engine running? It could be jumping somewhere and it doesn't show up until the engine is under a load.

I have a Qjet and I had a similar problem recently that turned out to be low fuel pressure.

It only backfired thru the carb once though and that is because I had been fooling around with the timing to try to rule that out.

Does the idle sound normal?

Does it sound normal when you rev it in neutral?

When was the last time you put new plugs, wires, cap, and rotor on it?

Have you changed the fuel filter?

Just start with the easiest and cheapest things that it could be and purchase a Haynes manual if you don't already have one.

I havent replaced any of that, ive only had the car about 4 months. It sounds fin in idle, when i rev it though in park or in neutral, it like coughs out of the exhaust pipes, like.. its like its gargling.

I would go with a new fuel filter first and see if that helps. Next would be replacing all the plugs, wires, cap, and rotor. It's not that expensive and will need to be done eventually anyway. Did this problem start all of a sudden or has it been gradually getting worse?

That's kinda the way mine did with the low fuel pressure. I could live with it a first and then it turned in to a real problem. Mine would pull hard thru first and then start bucking and bogging in second.

Does your's go thru the gears good if you only give a little gas?

My car had the same problem, apparently the float was stuck or something because it was overloading bad, I put an edelbrock 600 on it with a performer intake and it runs like a scalded dog. How many miles do you have on the car??

shouldn't be worn out then, I don't know what to tell you. I hope you can get it fixed because I know it's aggravating My only guess would be not enough fuel pressure or a float is sticking. Is yours an electronic quad?

There's a page on the FAQ board outlining the difference between the 305 and 305 HO (LG4 vs. L69) but it also briefly covers some information on how to make both engines a bit faster. I suggest you start there first, and ask specifics when you have more questions.

If you have only 34,000 miles on it then the QJet needs to be rebuilt and likely the fuel pump needs replacing, too. A carb that old may look brand new but all the rubber and neoprene parts in both it and the fuel pump have likely begun to leak.

Going on 23 years of age is a LOOOONNNGGG time to expect them to be in tip-top shape. Never happens.

Follow the parts in my sig for a fun 305
