backfire when i open the 4bbl edel 1405

ok here is the deal. I just bought a new edelbrock carb 1405. 600 cfm and when i open the 4bbl it backfires. Im trying to learn more about the carb but the book that comes with it does not tell you anything. I am running a 358 motor and a 700r4 transmission any suggestions would be good. O and another thing that might help you help me to figure this out when i took the motor out of my s-10 it had all kinds of power now it seems to be laggy. any help would be great thanks

The book that it comes with is actually very complete. What is it you're not finding?

The book was only like three pages and did not tell me anything but what every thing on the carb was. I just want to know what to do to get the car to stop backfiring when i stomp on it

sounds like the timing is retarded. get a light on it and see where it is set. i don't think that the carb has anything to do with backfiring. normally a crossed plug wire or two or retarded timing.

Never mind I found the problem. Downloaded the book off the internet and I had the distributor advance on the manifold vacuum port instead of the timed vacuum port. Sorry for bothering yall thanks for the responces

I'm surprised it made that much difference. The manual you downloaded off the net has the same info as the printed one that used to be included with the carb. Aren't they doing that anymore?
