any performance outta 305 4bbl????

I got a 305 4bbl and i wanna get as much punch out of it that i can before my 350 swap(who knows when money is an issue)
I went to the tech boards and i did that zero tension on the AV (which works) but what else can i squeeze out of it? i got 134,XXX miles on the original engine and i just want something alittle quicker.
I'll be putting in a 3.27 9 bolt posi soon and i hope that will make it accelerate alittle better.
Any thoughts let me know. Like i said it will only staying in while i save for a 350 crate.

Most of the things you need to increase power from your 305 involve a decent amount of money. For instance, if you really wanna push the 305 you're looking at headers $200-300, cam- about $150, head work (varies in price, but can be expensive if you don't have connections), and other small parts to tie it all together. If I were you, I would use that money to start saving for a 350. It's up to you- it's your car.

The prices of 350 blocks are pretty cheap right now. I'm working on a 350 block to put in my car that I got for $100.

one thing you could do is let your 305 breathe better..... if you get new exhaust from headers to the back, you could not only see gains with this motor, but be ready for when you swap the 350 in there..... before i swapped to a 350 i was able to get my 305 down to a 14.7 by just a deleted cat, hooker cat-back exhaust, and a K&n air filter.....my car also came with a 3.73 rear end, so that really helped me.....and if is you shop around, you could probably do the entire exhaust for under $500

i got a dynomax cat back, 5.0 HO dual snorkel, Aftermarket cat(to pass inspection, but throwing on a high flo this week) Throwing in a 3.27 posi. Im slapping on a 2.5 inch maunal cut out before the cat. With that in there, what do you think time wise it should run. AS long its decent enough to make it move better than it does with a 2.73 peg leg?
Let me know thanks.

Im probably going with a straight GMPP 350. ZZ4 or maybe that 350 Deluxe, Not sure yet. Getting a High performance 700R4 vette survos and the works. Let it handle the power and be a decent moving. My plans are to make it a low 13 daily driver.

if it is in top running shape and you have the 3.27 in there it should be able to pull off a low 15 probably.....but i dunno thats just my guess.....wont be able to find out until you try....my local track only charges 20 bucks to test and tune......good luck!

after a tune up and a new O2 sensor, the engine will be running in tip top shape. Pretty good for 134,XXX miles. It passed inspection two weeks ago with flying colors. I was guessing mid/low 15's as well. I don't wanna blow an *** load of money on a 305. I just want something to move alittle bit better than it does now. Next week i'll take it down to the track on test and tune night and see what its got as it sits with the 2.73. i want a good time so i know when i run it with the 3.27 i'll see the actual change.

I agree with others that the best bang for the buck is a complete exhaust (which ain't cheap). Headers, 3" y-pipe, a 3" high flow cat (if you need to pass emissions), and a complete 3" cat-back exhaust. I have found that Hooker shorties (which come with their own y-pipe) along with a 3" cat (or straight pipe, whichever you can get away with) and an inexpensive Dynomax 3" cat-back is about the cheapest way to go and still get something that fits well and is relatively easy to install. Obviously, this is all re-usable on the 350 later, so it's not wasted money.

For a little more pep out of the motor for free I'd bump up the ignition timing. If it's the low-output LG-4 motor then set is at 6* BTDC (stock setting is 0*). If it's the high output L-69 motor then bump it up to 10* BTDC (stock setting is 6*). That's usually a noticable improvement, but you probably won't be able to run it on the cheap stuff any more. Make sure you follow factory service procedures when you set it or you'll end up way outta whack.

A cheap 14" open element air cleaner is also usually an improvement over the stock air cleaner assembly (especially if it's the LG4's single snorkel assembly). Just make sure that the base of it's doesn't hit against the accelerator pump arm on the factory quadrajet carb. Depending on the air cleaner assembly you might need to stack up some air cleaner gaskets to get it up a fraction of an inch, or Holley makes plastic air cleaner spacer rings in various heights- the 1/2" tall one is all you would need to fit the QJet.

thanks. I think its already set a 6* because it had trouble at idle at 0. Im pretty sure thats already done. It already passed inspection and is good until 6-2007. Im slapping on a highflo cat next week. i got a Dynomax cat back already on there. 3.27 posi being slapped in. i hope it will wake it up just a little. Its the sh*t box LG4 soooooo what ever pep i can squeeze out of it will be a plus.
