need help, 85 IROC 305 carb
I think this is the right place to put this
Heres a vid.

I messed with the timing alittle (not to much, no light) and its alittle better but it is backfireing bad and black smoke, and it dies when I put it in gear.
what ya'll think? I think I may just need a new carb.? I have been told that it is my power valve and others have said that it is just my timing being off. It starts fine and idols(sp?) ok, I'm just dumb at get get it to work

If a picture is worth a thousand words, a video is worth even more. That engine is definately running on 7 cylinders. Check plug wires (crossed), plugs and compression. It may have either a broken valve spring or a valve not sealing-off/burnt. Did you just do an intake swap? Greets from Arab, AL.

if you have headers you can let it run awhile and drip some water on them just after the flange and if it doesnt boil off than that cylinder isnt running. drip water dont pour it.
that might help. good luck

Double check all plugs and wires and make sure all cylinders are firing. If the spark check out good on all cylinders, pop the valve covers and make sure all the valves are opening and shutting. Could be a broken pushrod. BTW what is your timing set at?

It does not over heat stays inbetween 170 180, not sure on the timing. Have to go get a timing light. I'm going to go at it Tues night one more time and try some things that ya'll have posted.

850 is gonna be way to much for a stock 305. Before you start throwing parts at it I'd make sure you know exactly what it is.
