Carb or engine trouble?!?

Well i had just replaced the cap, rotor, fuel filter, plugs and plug wires and my 1983 z28 still has the problem as stated in the messege "Fuel or engine problem?" Its acting like the 4bbl isnt working liek its gettign starved from fuel...ive check the timing gears and they line up...seems like when we advance the distributor it runs better, could this be the distributor, im probably going to get one from mallory ignition, i have to get this car running for the high school nationals at norwalk raceway park!

What kind of carb are you using? At what rpms are you having this trouble. What mods have you done to the engine. When did this problem first arise. When you say it is starved for fuel is the engine bogging down missing or what.

when you press the gas pedal slightly the car will build rpms slowly, then when u press the gas pedal down further the rpms will go up fast but then all of a sudden they go down fast, and the engine starts bouging out and actually stalls sometimes. im running autolite platnuims and i dont rember what distr. cap and rotor, but i did the tune up because i thought that was the problem, but the car is still doing it, when i advance the dist. the cur will run ok, still has a slight bough in it but not nearly as bad, but will do the same thing later on.

what kind of carb are you running? It sounds like you might have several problems. First make sure that your plugs are all gapped right, even if you purchased pre-gapped plugs sometimes they are off. Second make sure your timing is set right. Third clean out your carb, lubricate linkage with WD-40. If you have TBI run some fuel injector cleaner through your next tank of gas. if 4 barrel carb make sure secondaries are opening up when you mash the gas.

im running a 4 barrel quadra jet carberator, the wierd thing is, tht when the car runs like crap, the secondaries dont open, but when we advance the distibutor they open up but it falls back of when the car runs, but the distrbutor is staying in the same spot, im going to but a nw distributor soon for it from jegs

check your fuel pressure.. might be a little too high.. get an inline fuel pressure guage and play around with pressures.. in small increments.. possibly clean out the entire carb.. if its the stock Q-jet, then its up to you weather or not you want to try take it apart.. theres a crap load of pins and needles all over the place..

Please help me understand, You are saying that when you advance the distributor (advance the timing) the secondaries are opening up. What do you mean the distributor is staying in the same spot? Just so ya know the carb uses manifold vacuum to open the secondaries, If you dont allready have one invest in a vacuum guage to read manifold vacuum. Also you can adjust when the secondaries open up but I would not mess with that untill every thing is adjusted and cleaned. Quadrajets are great carberators when adjusted and running properly however they suck to rebuild. check all vacuum lines to be sure they are not leaking either.

I don't know what the exact # should be I allways try and get the highest vacuum reading possible. I would guess and say a min of 10.
