Help! Car Hesitates

I have a 305 with a Quad. its a older one from the 70's. So it does not have electic choke on any of that stuff. Also it doesnt have vacum lines for the emission crap. Anyway when i get on the gas from a stop it will do nothing for about 5-10 sec and then it will take off slowly until the rpm get to about 1500 and then it will drive normally.

What distributor are you using?

What did you do with the choke mechanism (butterfly, etc.) that are on it?

A stock distributor uses the ECM to determine ignition timing advance. With a 70's carb, the ECM won't have the information needed to make proper advance decisions. Therefore, it goes into "limp home" mode with next to no advance.

You need a distributor with vacuum and mechanical advance in order to run that carb.

Have you tied the choke open in some fashion or another?

I dont think that is the problem. It runs fine after i get it going. Also if i dont stop all the way it wont have a problem. i can just press the gas and get going right away.

As stated above, your stock distributor's ignition advance is controlled by the ECM and because you've switched carbs it is no longer receiving a throttle position reading to tell it to advance. When this is the case it will cause EXACTLY the conditions you describe above.

I will not go so far as to say that this is your ONLY problem, but it is definitely a major issue and should be remedied.

If you're using the stock dist (without vacuum and mechanical advance) you'll still get better performance by swapping to a dist designed to run with your mechanical carb. Of course, the dist could have been swapped for an older style when the carb was swapped. The stock style dist will not have the vacuum can on the side with a vacuum line connected to it.

An older style HEI with vacuum advance can be had for under $100 and will probably pay for itself with increased mileage fairly quickly. Both will swap over to a 350.

Let us know what you've got.
