You don't. It does. It's up to you to make sure it's getting the right information and capability to do its job.

Is your SES light coming on?

Re: car runs rich

possibly i have a gm code reader the blinking light deal but dont know how to transfer the number of blinks into a code. The black hose that leads into the carb from the t fitting on the front might be leaking. I saw gas on the top of the engine block yesterday not a ton but enough to notice and it smelled the worst up there for gas..

Sounds more like you've got a fuel leak.

Get the vacuum hose situation straightened out. Can't help anything to have leaks.

Go here https://www.thirdgen.org/service-eng...ht-error-codes for reading the codes. Your plug-in reader will take the place of the paper clip.

Re: car runs rich

alright so that black hose has to do with a vacumn hose? would the leak most likely be in the carb? to read the codes one goes by the total number of flashes and pauses to get the code?

There should be two black hoses going to the carb - one on the top front which collects vapors from the fuel bowl, no vacuum on it; the other going to the base in the middle bottom, that has vacuum on it.

Yes, count the flashes between pauses. It should start off with "1" "2" repeated 3 times, which is 12 (3 times). Every number is a 2-digit code. Let us know if anything but 12 comes up.

Well, maybe I misunderstood yours. Which do you think is leaking, the big black one, or the small black one? Either way, you should get it fixed so it doesn't leak.
