choke problems

so my choke wasn't working at all so i took off the choke heater (proper term?) that thing with the coil and figured out it was put in the wrong way so it would hold the choke butterfly open making it useless and i fixed that and it still never worked so i bought a new choke heater and it kinda works but the car wont stay running it starts and then dies a few times till it floods and then wont start at all till i jam something in the linkages to hold the butterfly open then she starts so is there anything i should be looking for to find this problem cuz ive got my brain racked thinking about it what else is involved with the choke that would cause my problem? thanks in advance
