Choke light!

Hi all,

Im new to the thirdgen scene and ive searched through the boards and found some help but not an exact answer to my situation. I have an 84 Camaro Sport. Today when i stopped at a light my lights started to dim my battery gauge started going down and my choke light came on. As i drove the lights and the gauge kept on going up and down. So i was wondering if anybody can explain to me whats going on

Welcome aboard thirdgen.org.

Your alternator is not charging properly. The choke heater relay is tied to alternator output, meaning it doesn't close until the alternator is charging. When the choke heater relay is open and the ignition is on, the choke light will come on.

Fix your alternator and the problems should go away.

Re: Choke light!

The factory carb's more than adequate. It's computer controlled and removing it requires replacing the dist and lock up control for converter. If it's running poorly it may need some attention or a rebuild.

I'll go one step farther and say you won't do better.

Re: Choke light!

Ok I see, Thats what alot of people have been telling me to stick with the stock carb. Now back on the alternator problem, Yesterday as i was driving and gave the car gas the belt would squeal. Could it be possible i just need a new belt?

Re: Choke light!

Ok so i tightened the belt and the squealing stopped but im still have ing the dimming lights, gauges dropping and rising, choke light steady when braking flashing when driving. So im going to bring it to an advance to test my alternator but my father said he doesnt think thats it because theres a clicking sound coming from that area so he thinks it something else. any other ideas?

Check the "choke heater" fuse.

Re: Choke light!

Look under you hood on the pass. side and see if the choke wire is touching metal or something . Mine did that and the insulation on the wire was cracked and it was touching metal and was doing the same thing your talking about ..
