New Carb, will stock air cleaner fit?

Hey I have a 1987 Firebird and I just bought a Holley 4bbl carb(Rebuilt engine) and I was wondering if the stock air cleaner assembly will work with this carb? Its a Holley 600cfm vacuum secondaries carb. I plan on getting a chrome air cleaner later but I was wondering if the stock one will work for the time being.
Thanks
Dave

Depends upon the style of fuel bowls on it. The side-hung float type (single fuel line connection) will fit under the stock air cleaner. The center-hung float type (dual feed) will not.

Re: New Carb, will stock air cleaner fit?

He man thanks. I have the side hung floats so I'm good there. Another question. Would this air cleaner be a good one to go with as far as size/fit?

Holley 14'' x 3'' Chrome Air Cleaner, fits 5-1/8'' Neck

Is 14" x 3" a good size to get?

14" x 3" is the typical size. You will need a drop base type.

Cool thanks alot. Just so I know, what is the difference between a drop base and regular base, and why do I need the drop base style?

A "standard base" has the mounting surface for the bottom of the air filter above the mounting base to the carb - this raises the top of the air cleaner to about 5" above the carb.

A "drop base" lowers the mounting surfact for the bottom of the air filter below the mounting base to the carb - this allows the air cleaner to sit on top of the carb and still be able to close the hood.

If you look at your factory air cleaner, you will see that it is drop base.

Re: New Carb, will stock air cleaner fit?

Ok so if I got the standard base I would have to cut a hole in the hood and get a scoop? Also, do you know if the hood will close even with the drop base when you have a high rise intake manifold such as an Edelbrock Performer RPM? The carb wont be here till tomorrow so I cant see for myself yet whether or not it will close.

Oh and is there any difference in performance/restrictiveness between the drop and standard bases?

Here is a old pic with the q-jet but thats the air cleaner im useing. Also the fedex guy should be here in an hour or so to deliver my edelbrock elite series triangular air cleaner which will also fit with no problems (i hope) lol..
