carb fuel pressure

how much fuel pressure do you need with a carb?

I have this fuel pump http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku and I am thinking the pressure is to high. The car runs really rich and no matter what I do it dosent seem to change. I have a 1406 edelbrock 600 carb, I got the calibration kit and put leaner jets and metering rods in and it still runs really rich

Re: carb fuel pressure

You shouldn't normally use more than about 6 PSI or so with a carb.

Re: carb fuel pressure

my fuel pump is rated for max 7.5 psi, would the extra 1.5 psi make that big of a difference?

Re: carb fuel pressure

I've had this regulator in my tool box for a few years, I think my dad gave it to me, anyway will it work with a carb? and how do you adjust it or is it even adjustable?
I tried to look up the numbers on it and I didn't find anything.

the numbers are 34r-6657B and 446

Re: carb fuel pressure

Looks to me like if you tighten down the stud on the opposite side of the in port it should lower the fuel pressure.

By running rich do you mean at idle or driving? If at idle, then screw in the two screws some on the front that have springs on them. If it's rich driving, might try taking the top off the carb and adjusting the floats so the fuel level is lower. Also, I was running around 8psi last year with my carb just fine.

Re: carb fuel pressure

Thanks, will it work with a carb or it does really matter?

That looks like one made for a carb.

Re: carb fuel pressure

looks like the little carb type. adjuster is the locknut and threaded bolt on top. you will need a guage too, to see what you've got. but check the summit website for the number on the reg, if its not a carb type you could ruin the carb with too much pressure.

Re: carb fuel pressure

I already tried summit, couldn't find anything. I've been running it without a regulator for awhile the pumps only rated at 7.5 psi

You don't need a regulator with that pump. If you want to put that regulator in, it'll be fine. You adjust the pressure on it by loosening the lock nut, and turning the "stud" in to raise pressure, out to lower pressure, using a gage to quantify the pressure, then tightening the lock nut.

Did your car originally have a carb, or crossfire?

When is it rich? Idle? Cruise? WOT? How do you know it's rich? Are the floats adjusted properly? Do you have a filter before the carb inlet?

it was carb originally, its rich at idle, cruise and WOT
yes I have a filter before the carb inlet.

Re: carb fuel pressure

How are you determining it's rich at idle, cruise and WOT?

Re: carb fuel pressure

I put the regulator in today, It runs a lot better now, It ran out of gas before I had chance to drive it.

Plugs, it always reeks like gas, big clouds of black smoke out the exhaust
