Re: quadrajet carb for 85 z28

Well sounds like the carb is not working properly. I would try adjusting it and getting it to a happy middle ground where it runs good. Does it have a ton of miles on it might be ready for a rebuild or a new one bud.

Re: quadrajet carb for 85 z28

Make sure the choke wire is providing 12volt to the choke housing when the engine is running. It pulls power from the alt so that the choke coil isn't heated with the ignition on/engine off. Make sure the choke blade is slowly opening after started. Should take a few minutes for it to open to 90 degrees straight up.

Improper choke action could cause all your symptoms.

How was the choke acting when you checked? Open 90 degrees straight up when fully warm?

Re: quadrajet carb for 85 z28

if you warm the car up to operating temp go to the pass side of the carb and there is a green lever behind the choke assembly

move that up and down

when the car is cold there should be some spring tension on it

when it is cold there should not be any tension

Re: quadrajet carb for 85 z28

Most likely cause of temp guage failure is loosing the connection between the sender wire and the temp sensor. Check the guage sensor located on the drivers head between #1 and #3. Should have a spade terminal connector for a single wire guage feed. Reconnect if loose. Replace the wire if missing.

Your choke coil should slowly open the choke blade while the engine is running. Should take a couple minutes. If you've found the choke wire you can temporarily disconnect it and check it for 12 volts WITH the engine RUNNING.

Black smoke means it's running too rich.
