The factory computer q-jet is a great street-performance set-up. The only justification for changing it to anything else is if you have a manual transmission, in which case a double pumper Holley is the better choice (but is not emissions legal for street use in any of the 50 United States).
You can't put anything else on without changing the distributor unless you set up a throttle position sensor with a non-computer carb (did it myself last year, I wouldn't call it a 100% successful effort).
You can't get a "new" CC q-jet, but you can get rebuilt ones. Available from your typical chain parts store, Summit, Jegs, Jet, etc.
What's wrong with the one you have?

Were you able to make the adjustments required such as lean/rich stops, idle air bleed, throttle position sensor?
Does your SES light come on?
On issue with q-jets is some galley plugs on the bottom of the fuel bowl. They're plugged with lead and have been known to leak. When they leak, they allow fuel to go straight from the fuel bowl to the intake manifold. Fairly simple fix to clean and epoxy over the plugs, but you have to have the throttle plate removed to do it.
Does it otherwise run okay?
I know it's tough having your dad away, but rest assured what he's doing, and the sacrifice you're making, are appreciated.

Re: what carb
ok, so you have the right set up for your engine with the factory ccc carb. I recommend checking timing before changing or adjusting anything else.
just a thought - If are you close to a military base with an autohobby shop, then the shop should be able to check and adjust timing to factory specs for very little cost.

Re: what carb
if you take it out and drive it everything seems fine besides the exhaust leak it will bog if you slam it to the floor but then picks right back up and takes off but if it sits and idles for like 10 min then you shut it off and come back and start it sometimes it will be fine other times it shakes and bucks like only 2 cylinders are firing and you can take the plugs out and the are black and soaked in gas i will post some pics of them when i get time everything is factory except for the accel supercoil i put on

Re: what carb
that's one dirty plug. are the plugs old? if they are then you might try a set of a/c delco plugs. they really work well in these cars because they designed for them by GM. just the basic ones at about a buck a piece will do fine for a year or two.
when you get some time then timing and the things five7kid mentioned on the carb (lean/rich stops, idle air bleed, throttle position sensor).
