i have a 305 and the carb is a Q-jet... my question is what causes it to bog down and how do you fix it?

Re: bogging down
Based on the limited info you gave I will have to ask a few questions. What year is the car? Is it stock configuration or has it been mucked with? When does the bog happen? In my experience the CCC quadrajets are quite good and when they function correctly they are quite fun, they make a great sound when they open up. I just need to get an idea of what we're working with to be able to help out.

In the "welcome to the carb forum" sticky in the top section of this forum, and also linked from the thirdgen.org homepage, there is a tech article about getting the most out of your computer controlled q-jet. It describes the air valve system and how to adjust it. It doesn't talk enough about the choke pull-off ("vacuum break" in factory-speak), which is also involved with the AV system and avoiding bog upon opening those huge secondaries.
Read through that stuff, check to verify your choke pull-off is working properly, make the AV adjustments, and you'll be able to fix this problem.

Re: bogging down
Understand, it gets nasty here in Oh too, but it is getting warmer here now. Been working on my nephew's 88 formula 305 tpi the last couple of days. But while you're waiting, the write-up that five7kid mentioned is very worth-while reading. The CCC q-jets are really not that difficult to get dialed in. I'll check back. BTW five7kid knows what he's talking about.
