were all carbs computer controlled?
this may sound dumb. I have a 1984 z-28 with an l69 motor and the stock q-jet. is this computer controlled? what emission systems can i remove that will not have to be programmed out of the computer? if i got headers without the emission stuff would it make it run worse? thanks.

All U.S.-delivered 3rd gens with carb were computer controlled.
Installing headers without A.I.R. won't make it run worse, but it will make it illegal.

just get a set of 2055 headers. They fit nice, have a great design, are instant HP upgrade, and are compliant. Unless on the track I think it's a myth that removal of emissions improves HP. When set up right your L69 will perform and save big bucks too; it's not uncommon for people to get 25 MPG when they tune their 3rd Gen right. Take off the emission components and your engine can run hot too. Do a search on "increase horse power" and number of real good HP increases will come up.
Re: were all carbs computer controlled?
You can remove everything except for the TPS, VAC sensor, BARO sensor, Coolant temp sensor, EGR solenoid & valve, PCV valve and O2 sensor. In some cases people have even removed the EGR system completely and it still ran without any codes, but others have not been successful with that.
So, you're talking about removing basically the air pump system and evaporative emissions system. That's like removing about 100 yards of vacuum hoses and tubes from the engine bay. The engine bay looks a LOT cleaner and simpler from their removal, although it won't give you any more power.

Re: were all carbs computer controlled?
scooter- i will look into these headers. thanks! i also think my carb needs to be tuned. im pretty sure its running rich but i havent checked if formally and i really like the 5.0 and the q-jet so im going to try and keep this set up and maximize horsepower. i love my l69!
Damon-thanks you. my main goal was to clean up the engine bay actually but i didnt want to loose horse power while doing it.
are their any threads or articles about removing these sytems?
