What type of Carb for mild 305?
What type of Carb for mild 305?
I am a bit new to carby engines, I will be rebuilding the 305 on my Z28 soon and I am not sure what carb to use. I was thinking Holley 600 Traditional Street 4 bbl. I am just not sure what kind - EGR vs non EGR? Manual choke or electric? What system does the stock engine use? What is best for a nice mild street engine?

well i would say a 650 of some kind, none EGR because there most simple, and if its just a summer car then you wont really need the choke but if its a everyday driver then probably and electric choke. You can find an old holley for cheap and rebuild it so check around before you buy a new one.

what kind of transmission do you have? if its auto, grab a vacuum secondary setup. as the previous poster mentioned, you'll definitely want to have a choke if its a daily driver. I like electric for ease of use (although installation takes an extra couple minutes). You'll have a mix response regarding holley vs edelbrock, but both have their pro's and con's. I ran a holley and liked its range of tunability on my last setup. If you're sticking to the 305, something in the 600-650 range should be more than enough. Also, what do you have for emissions in your state? That can make a difference in what is and is not allowed to be on there.

the quadra junk lol. dont' get me wrong great carb but once they crap out they crap out. either holley or carb like they mention. I am running a 600cfm edelbrock
for my mild 305 and works great. But preference of what ever you want they both are great carbs i like both of them. if u go edelbrock if u want to get a little more performance go with another product of edelbrock which is the intake manifold. called edelbrock performer. its a nice setup and runs great. or stock is just good. i have a crate 305 so i went with the performer with other setups.

My first thought when I saw the subject line was "stock CC q-jet". This supports "mild", "305", "street", etc., etc., etc.
To say a q-jet, "once they crap out they crap out" is silliness. They can be ham-fisted and FUBAR'd, but they don't "crap out". 99% of q-jet problems are caused by "mechanics" that don't understand them and refuse to learn.
Quinny, if your car already has the stock q-jet, you aren't going to improve anything by putting on something else. Period.

1A Dan: My car is a factory 5 speed manual. I am sure that there are plenty of fans for both Holley and Edelbrock, just like Chev and Ford... I have no preference in carbs because I have never really worked with them.

The stock carb and set up are working great for me. One of the things I've relearned is how to rebuild and adjust the carb and it's great - no extra cost at all from having to swap out for a new carb etc. The car is super dependable now, and IMO it's due to the stock carb being set-up right and a good tune-up w/ dizzy at 6*BTDC.
After a caarb rebuild and tune-up, I'd suggest looking at street legal headers, big cat, and big exhaust as an upgrade...
