new to carbs, need some help.

So i was just told the car i have (1986 Pontiac Trans Am 5.0) has a rochester quadrajet, and my problem is that its heavily over carburated and makes the engine smoke just a bit too much for my local police's liking. It only has 119K miles so i know its carb and not the rings or something of that nature, so I guess im asking, how can i adjust the carb in leaner? its way too rich for me to drive it, and ive never really played with a carb before, i was all EFI before so this is all new
any hlp would be great!

Re: new to carbs, need some help.

i dont know, im the one that sits in the car, my fathers a mechanic and calls for over carburation but says i wanted the car and its my job to fix her. I believe him when he says its carb because hes been in the car game for a long time and just now retired to work on his own cars.
I just dont know how to adjust a carb to be honest. Never owned a carb car before this one

Re: new to carbs, need some help.

hit up the search feature on adjusting the quadrajet...... im not a fan of those id rather tune a holley or edelbrock carb. but if the engine is stock the carb should be a stock unit which might just need a rebuild

Re: new to carbs, need some help.

thats kinda what i thought was it could use a rebuild. but for now (low on cash lol) i just got some fuel system cleaner to run through, and im still gonna try to tune it as soon as i know how, it smokes too much for around here. And the plan is once i get paid is to get a few new parts from Summit to spruce up the 305. but for now i really need to be told how to adjust it just so its not so rich, its sucking gas like rapid hell. got like 4mpg on the way home, i know v8's dont get awsome gas milage but crap shouldnt be that low.

Re: new to carbs, need some help.

And one more thing to consider is that the Q-Jets rubber (neoprene?) floats wear out and start to sink, which makes the carb run pig rich, and the ethanol in todays gas doesnt help matters.....so you might try to replace the floats with brass ones....also check the O2s theyll make you run rich as well..... is the Service Engine Soon (SES) light on ? if so pull the codes it might give you some insight... https://www.thirdgen.org/service-eng...ht-error-codes

Re: new to carbs, need some help.

Its not throwin any lights on, i found several leaky gaskets and lack of an exhaust manifold gasket today, i been at work on her since 8am and got more to do, but upon inspection fo the title i found the cars a 84' not a 86' as the owner had told me.
But shes runnin better, and im going to my local scrap yard tomorrow they pulled me a edelbrock carb from a chevy 305 camaro in the yard for $10 and i ordered a Weiand SBC manifold from Summit as well as some Hedman headers to replace the *&%# $#%^& headers that it comes with stock plus some thrush glasspacks and 2 1/2" piping from header back

Re: new to carbs, need some help.

Your qjet is computer controlled (if its stock) and changing to an edelbrock will also require swapping the distributor and controlling torque converter lockup without the ECM's guidance.

You may consider a rebuild and repair of whatever isn't working properly on your current system first. Headers and manifold will be fine with the stock system as long as you include an O2 bung.

Oh and the edelbrock's going to be a step down in performance (and mileage) compared to a properly running feedback qjet.

Re: new to carbs, need some help.

really? wow i wouldnt think that qjet is better than an edelbrock...ok then, well guess ill just rebuild the qjet.
Will it mount up to an aftermarket manifold ok?
and the headers dont come with an o2 bung, but i can weld one in there i have a welder and i did it on my last car since it was full EFI and wouldnt work properly without it.

Re: new to carbs, need some help.

Yea i use edlebrock 600fm. use to be the quadrajunk. Quadrajunk is good when they run right. But if you plan on using the edlebrock. Make sure you get vacuum advance distributor. That will keep your timing in check. Since it won't be running computer. But make sure you don't have emissions running it like that would not pass inspection. I have had the edlebrock for quite sometime and easy to tune. Never had any problems with it.

Re: new to carbs, need some help.

emissions
I dont have any of that Bullcrap here in Pendleton, this is ******* country right here, closest city with emmisions is Portland OR lol
Im lucky with that, because today me and my father removed every single unnecessary smog/emissions crap from under my hood, its starting to look like this kinda car should, i really hated opening the hood and seeing nothing but wires and hoses to different useless parts to make the air "cleaner" lol

Re: new to carbs, need some help.

Thanks, im not very good at navigatnig forums or i prolly coulda found that lol

Can you think of any cheap bang mods that will help free up some HP?
full length headers and 3" exhaust, cat delete, strait 3" pipe with cherrybombs (or glasspacks or whatever u wanna call em) as resonators is my exhaust plan, exact copy of whats on my dads Chevelle. anything other than that that will free up power?

oh and since the cars low miles, whats ur thoughts on a roots Weiand 177 supercharger on there? not worth it? i love superchargers lol

Re: new to carbs, need some help.

Well exhaust is a big restriction on these cars so you are heading down the rite path.... If you want to add some easy bolt on performance items first I would suggest a set of headers and open the factory 2 1/2 exhaust to a 3" performance exhaust system along with better high flow catalytic converter or gut it (no emissions rite?) cause it also robs hp from the engine. By simply putting a better flowing exhaust system will easily give you another est 20 - 40 hp. I also suggest getting a better ignition system either by adding a MSD 6 box and blaster coil or just an upgraded coil with higher output, more dwell and multiple spark capability. With some good plug wires this can boost hp by another 10-30 hp due to better spark to air fuel mixture. But first get the Carb runnin stoich !!!!

Re: new to carbs, need some help.

i didnt know the plugs and spark made such a difference, didnt do crap on the imports lol
well thats pretty accomplishable, got a store here in town that deals in only GM v8's haha
well crap, should be makin 200 with exhaust and the ignition boosted

Now will my Qjet work with a square bore intake manifold? like a Weiand or edelbrock?

not unless you get an adapter plate, and from what I hear they are pretty restrictive esp if you are going from spread carb to square intake,.....not so bad if you are going square carb to spread intake. Q-Jet is a spread so get a spread intake. eBays got them REAL chaep.

Blower is definantly something i want to do, and its gonna be done on the project motor dad gave me, he decided to go BBC so he gave me his 383 blower project motor. 9.0:1 compression dished pistons internals rated to 1000HP so its almost finished for the car but i got alot more prep to do to the tranny and rear end before throwi in a 650+HP engine
