How much smoke is normal on a pcv valve??

My 87 gta has been swapped to a carb setup its got a 600 holley 4 bbl. The pcv vaccum line is hooked up to the pass side valve cover and the breather is on the other side. Is that the correct way to hook it up? The breather smokes alot more than I'd think it should. The engine has 144k miles but I'm thinking the guy had nitrous on it considering there was a jegs gauge in the car that read 0-1500 psi and i'm hoping its not blow-by. How much smoke is normal and which way is the correct way to hook it up?

Thanks for the info.

The setup is normal, the smoke is not.

is your breather black and beginning to ooze? looks like you could be for a rebuild sooner than later...

Thanks for the quick reply! I didn't know if anyone was up this late. I guess i'll be doing a compression check tomorrow. The guy said the car ran 8.50's in the 8th and its pretty much stock. I thought he was just b/sing but I guess it ran that with a 100-125 shot

yeah if he didn't build his engine around the fact that he'd be running nitrous, he may have fried it...

Shouldn't the car be smoking out of the exhaust if it had excessive blow-by? Theres an exhaust leak because it still has the emissions exhaust manifolds on it but besides that it runs/sounds strong. If I have to rebuild its getting a lsx

when I had blowby on my car, I don't remember excess smoke out the tailpipe... I believe you'd get smoke if your heads were shot or if it was running rich... my car is carb'd and oil would pool in the air filter assembly...

Blow-by means the gas is escaping around the rings into the crankcase instead of going into the exhaust.

Ok that makes sence. The piston walls/rings are worn enough to let gas pas by but not enough so that it lets oil by. I let it run for a little while today and it didn't smoke but a little out of the valve cover breather. I might switch the pcv to the other side and see if that helps. The motor still needs a rebuild but I'd like to drive it until I get the money to rebuilt it the way I want. Thanks for all the info guys.
