Motor Bogged?

Recently had a problem with my motor.
saturday the throttle had gotton stuck so the RPM was high on it around 7000-8500 max. and about 280 degrees on the temp gauge.
anyways fixed that probelm now it seems like it is bogged. ive have been told by a guy who knows a little about motors that it sounds like a dropped valve. but i think its just not getting enough gas. i have a 4 barrel Quadrajunk carb. the back 2 barrels seem to never open. but then again its an old carb and has been through a couple re builds. could it be i need a new carb? carbon build up? or really a dropped valve.

it still runs. but when it does i have feather the gas pedal and slowly push it. otherwise it almost stalls out. but even with it dropped to the floor its bogged. its bogged in neutral as well.
ive replaced the spark plugs and messed with the distrubtor a little bit to see if anything would help it. and it doesnt.

i dont want to spend anymore money unless i know it will be fixed. oh and its a built 350 bored to 60 over.

Thanks for reading!

Re: Motor Bogged?

If it's a dropped valve the quickest way to check is to pull the 4 bolts off the valve covers on both sides and pull the covers off. See if any of the valves are dropped with out the spring being pushed. Thats the quickest way. If none of the valves are dropped then I would start looking at the carb.

Re: Motor Bogged?

i talked to another buddy of mine and he said it would be smoking and you would hear it.
and to test it you put a dollar bill on the exhaust tip and if it sucks at all then a valve is bad. im doing that tomorrow but for now i doubt it. but my carb i see gas going down and i hear it sucking air but idk. ill post some pictures tomorrow.

If that was the case, you would have puked rods and pistons in no time.

You won't see them open blipping the throttle in the driveway.

You need to find out if you have an internal engine problem (a dropped valve would have locked up the engine, or have done severe internal damage - but you could have a wiped out cam lobe, scored cylinder wall, burnt valve, etc.), ignition problem (very likely - plugs, wires, cap, rotor), or tuning issue (not too likely, other than an ignition problem). Pull the plugs, see if all of them are firing, if any are worn out, carboned up, etc. Check the resistance of each spark plug wire. Cap & rotor are relatively easy and inexpensive to replace. Do a compression check.

A dropped valve and a carb problem do not sound anything like each other.

Oh, with regard to "Quadrajunk carb" - don't come in here insulting what is arguably the best street/performance carb available in the free world and expect sympathy.

Re: Motor Bogged?

this is my first car so idk if its common with thirdgens but when you turn it off at a rev the RPM stays there. well i will show you that the rpm was that high.

this was on my phone so i took a picture with my camara.

but more info on the car! i took it out last night and it ran good for about 5-10 minutes. i thought it was done. but after that it started to bog down again.. should i check my fuel filter on it?

Occasionally the needle can get to the wrong side and go over to the high side. Mine did that once when I first got the car running - I flipped it back where it was supposed to be by hand, and it never did that again.
