Cruise Control
Cruise Control
HELP! please
I have stock cruise control on my camaro, but it doesnt work because the person I bought it from replaced the carb and didnt exactly know what he was doing. I looked on the dakota digital website and they have a cruise control module for sale and you can buy the ***** and everything. There are two different models though and thats where Im confused. I have a 1985 Camaro Z28 with a 5.0 305, Edelbrock Performer Carb, and 5-spd trans. Can someone help me on which one I need to get the cruise control working?

I was also thinking about getting one of their digital gauge sets so would that change which cruise control I would need?

Re: Cruise Control
If you are going to use the digital dash stuff from them, you have to have the 1st one.
If you are not using their digital dash stuff, then you have to use the second one.
So you need to decide on the digital dash stuff first, they are not interchangable.

Re: Cruise Control
I will take some pictures tomorrow, and post how my cruise is hooked up on my 84 with the Qjet. You should have the same/similar bracket on your carb, so maybe it will help you with what you need. Previous owner probably just disconnected it and left it hanging so I'm thinking all you need to do is hook it up and it should run fine unless something else is wrong with it.

It's Edelbrock part#1484 - I just don't know if it'll work with the bracket I plan to try and use:

As I said, don't know for sure if either works since I haven't ordered either yet..

Re: Cruise Control
Ok, got the pictures, just need to load them up which I'll do after work tonight. I will also take some more of my bracket with everything hooked up so you can see the throttle in relation to the cruise control hook up.

I'm tying to hook up an Edelbrock carb right now, and I've been searching and found this adapter plate that's supposed to allow you to hook up the cruise cable and throttle, but I'm not sure how this is supposed to work...

Re: Cruise Control
The throttle bracket is what your throttle cable hooks to on on the carb. My aftermarket carb didn't come with one, I had to take one off my factory carb. I am pretty sure Edelbrock sells a 700R4 throttle bracket for your carb. When is say aftermarket, I mean an aftermarket Quadrajet. Same basic carb, just one that was rebuilt from a professional builder.

Re: Cruise Control
You probably have a different bracket holding it and that's already hooked up, or else you couldn't drive the car. There is also a cable for the cruise control (has a slot on the end). IF your car is an automatic, they'll also be a third cable for the trans kickdown.
The adapter plate (first one, #1484)) allows you to rehook up the throttle cable and it's supposed to allow you to hook up the criuise control cable also. The cable for the trans is a whole other thing.

Re: Cruise Control
As promised, here are the pictures.
The first one is of the cruise unit itself. It's mounted on the front drivers side of the car by the charcoal canister. It's a bellows type device that pulls in when activated (Using an internal vacuum source) pulling the cable my finger is on. The electronics and vacuum hook ups are in front of the large diaphram and hidden from view.
The second picture is where the cable for the cruise is mounted to the carb. The one my finger is resting on is the cruise cable. The one above it is the throttle linkage. Not every carb has the post the cruise linkage is mounted on (had to take it from my factory carb).
The third picture, I am pointing at the bracket that holds the cruise line. This bracket is bolted to the intake itself. Going in toward the carb you can see the throttle return spring, the transmission hook up (small one on the bottom underneath everything else) and the throttle linkage (Large linkage closest to the carb). I hope this clears up some of the confusion.
