Stock hood clearance?
I am going to switch my tbi to carb, I have an Edelbrock Performer EPS intake and an Edelbrock thunder series 600cfm carb. I was wondering if it will fit under my 91 RS's hood?
BTW someone told me that when I swap to carb from TBI I need to change my cam, is that BS or what?
Thanks, Chris

Re: Stock hood clearance?
this is bs. i swapped mine to a edelbrock 650 and the cam was never touched. my advice would be go with a holley if you want a air filter.

You can use a drop base. Or a non-drop with a 2 in filter. I use a non drop 9inch with a 2" filter on a Performer RPM with no clearance issues. The EPS is almost a full 1/2 inch shorter than a Performer RPM or Performer Air Gap RPM - so you'll have no issues at all.

Thank you very much, I was a little worried. The air-gap will also fit though with the stock hood and Edelbrock carb?

Re: Stock hood clearance?
I have the Eps with a 650 Edelbrock carb had to use a drop base filter to clear stock hood and it still rubs the insulation on the bottom of the hood. Didn't have a problem until the Virginia police had a fit over my cowl hood.

Re: Stock hood clearance?
That sucks about your hood. I can't wait to get my cowl hood, I just wanted to make sure that I could do the swap and still have space until I get my hood. I do want to end up with the Air-Gap intake, Performer RPM heads, .500 lift cam, and full exhaust. I just have to do one thing at a time. lol

Re: Stock hood clearance?
I had to cut the bracing on my first third-gen. I had the Edelbrock Performer 2101 with a Holley 750 and a drop base air cleaner and a 2 or 2 1/2 inch filter. Also, no you don't need to change the cam, but it's very tiny and after the exhaust the most restrictive part of the engine is the cam and heads.

Re: Stock hood clearance?
The problem comes in with the "drop-base" air cleaner. Folks just say "drop-base" like there's only one ... there's many available and all "drop" a different amount.
I hated the drop base - I went through 3 different brands. None would clear carb linkage/choke without a spacer (dumb to me to get a drop base and have to use a spacer - defeats the purpose doesn't it?), they are all 14in units (which means the base rubs the distributor wires), they never seal good (because of the stupid spacer), and the air flow is so restricted from it "dropping" so much you might as well just have a 1/2 in filter.
That's why I went with the 9in non-drop with a 2in filter - it doersn't rub wires, has plenty of clearance under hood, and no linkage/choke clearance issues as it's all above the plate. Spectre makes one on the shelf at AZ for $29 with a rechargeable filter.

I had to cut the bracing for the wingnut. And I didn't say anything about the size drop on the drop base aircleaner, I built that car in 2002.

Re: Stock hood clearance?
Thanks guys, sorry didn't get back to you. I have finished the swap a long time ago and it runs a whole lot better. The only thing is that there is a short in the IGN spot on the fuse block so every time I plug my dizzy 12v wire to it, it blows my gauge fuse. So I have the dizzy wire wrapped around one of the blades of the radio fuse for now. But everything is good for now, just recently put my headers on and had someone make me a 2.5in y pipe. It defiantly woke the car up.
Thanks, Chris
