Not Startingup right away, carb problem?
So my 86 z28 has a brand new engine in it (carb'd of course) and when I turn the key, it turns over for a few seconds and I have to give it some gas to start it up. My dad says it's just because it's a carb'd motor, but I think it takes to long to start up.
Last night I tried tuning my carb, which I'm inexpeiranced in doing, and I thought I had fixed it. But this morning it was doing the same thing again (taking to long to start). On the bright side,my idle sounds better than before. But I still want to turn the key and have it start right up. Any ideas?
Thanks
-Daniel

Exactly! The other day I was leaving Taco Bell, and I dont live in the best area so all these gang bangers where hanging out around there. I was trying to start it up, and they just laughed at me... anyone else would get a earful of choice words lol, but I wont risk it with someone who might have a gun.

Describe your starting procedure from when you sit in the car until it starts.

I do exactly what evilemokid94 said haha. Today I tried adjusting the the electric choke on my carb. Seemed to help, but at that time the engine was still warm. The real test will be tomorrow morning when I go to work.

Set the choke tension so that the choke plate is just barely held closed with the engine cold. From there you can make small adjustments either way as necessary.
To start the car, put the pedal to the floor and let it all the way off once to set the choke and give it an initial pump shot. In very cold weather you may need to do it twice. Then turn the key and start the car. If it doesn't catch within a few seconds, gradually ease the pedal to the floor while continuing to crank. Don't run the starter more than 10-15 seconds.
In -20 C weather (that's about -5 F for those in the benighted states of America), my 84 will start before the starter has turned the engine through a full rotation.
