CCC Quadrajet won't idle

New engine (355), carb rebuilt using a quality kit, meters, rods, etc. All the vacuum lines are capped. The car starts right up, revs up smoothly, idles fast and as it warms up and idles down, it stalls. I've adjusted the mixture control screws out as far as 6 turns and no improvement. The base idle screw has been turned almost all the way. Any help would be appreciated. I can't even get the car to idle to break the engine in.

Re: CCC Quadrajet won't idle

Nevermind, I took it to a carb shop for a full rebuild. We'll see how it turns out in a few days.

Re: CCC Quadrajet won't idle

OK. The carb guy says there will be problems with the ecm and will never run right with the cam I have. It is a 230* @ .050, .480 lift, 108* LSA. He says I will lose braking power, have unburnt fuel, blah, blah , blah, and suggested tossing the ecm. I got a response from Cliff Ruggles, and he suggested that I do the following:

" You would have needed to add idle
bypass air, larger down channel, idle tubes, etc.....Cliff "

Please help asap. I'm getting conflicting opinions...

The cam is confusing the O2 sensor in open loop. It idles when cold because it is in open loop.

It can probably be made to handle it, but I couldn't tell you how to go about it. Keeping it in open loop at idle through computer programming may do it, but again, I couldn't tell you for sure.

Re: CCC Quadrajet won't idle

At this point I'm retaining the ecm only for the torque converter. I am having a non-CC Quadrajet rebuilt.

The ECM won't lock the TC without the input from the carb.

Oh, ok. Thanks. I'll have to buy a kit, then.

Your carb guy isn't wrong, he's just not totally correct. IT can be made to work. Cliff Ruggles built my CC Qjet for my car, built 350, about the same cam which only runs about 10" of vacuum at idle, barely 16 at 2500rpm. Haven't had any problems since I got it back. I don't have any issues with my brakes unless I sit at idle too long, say a long stop light, then go and have to try and stop before I get my RPM's up, then it's like old manual brakes! haha Be forewarened though, unless you have him do it in the winter, it'll be about a 4-5 month turn around.
