CarburetorsCarb discussion and questions. Upgrading your Third Gen's carburetor, swapping TBI to carburetor, or TPI to carburetor? Need LG4 or H.O. info? Post it here.
Have you guys seen these? They aren't "built" for thirdgens but they would work just fine with a little modification (if any) I like the looks of these two. I think it would be worth the cost if you are looking for a little HP increase.
You have to use a low profile version, unless you have a cowl hood. The low profile versions don't flow as well as the standard height versions, so you have to use a dual inlet type low profile version.
A few members have used their stuff successfully. I had a standard height carb hat single inlet version on the '57 back when it was carb'd. Worked fine.
they look pretty cool. but theyre a universal design (as most of spectres stuff is) so itll require some work to fit it right. ive though about fabbing up a set of hi/lo projector headlights and using one of those and piping it into the unused headlight housing for a ram-air effect.
Yeah, I saw them on some 2nd Gen camaros and they looked great. There would be some Modding but could be worth it, if you put some thought into it. More cold air is always a good thing
You're better off running a carb hat and a cone filter for hood clearance, and if you use the low profile hats, you'll end up with a 675cfm intake unless you go with a dual inlet system. Using a round filter in a case will not leave you much hood clearance unless you have a cowl, and in that case you're better off building a carb pan to get cold air through the cowl.
Im probably gonna do a single inlet anyway... but I'm undecided.

I haven't used that kit, but I have tried several other Spectre products and they were junk. Thin metal and poor fit. I remember buying their fuel filters and they always leaked too.

Im still not certain that you would actually see 675. Maybe if you have the inlet turned to the side of the motor. Or if the carb doesnt have a choke horn.

Both the low profile and the regular height single inlet carb hats are not thin metal. They are actually pretty heavy and fit good. I cant speak for anything else.
I definetly plan on having a set-up similar to this, once my motor swap is complete!! Do yourself a favor and check out there website.. Sick set-ups with plenty of pics for you to checkout!! And for the quality just like any company, you pay for what you get, spectre has kits From 100 bucks to 500 bucks. And way better custom carb kits then this one, as well as a custom fabrication program!! You buy their fab kit, mark your measurements and they will cut, weld and polish your own custom set-up!! Not even k&n does that!! Definetly worth a look, trust me!!!

I haven't had that experience in the past several years. I had a Mr. Gasket dual feed fuel line that just about burned down my car, but the Spectre piece I bought to replace it was fine. I couldn't get factory center-bolt valve covers to fit my World heads, but the Spectre parts fit fine and never leaked. The Spectre air intake kit I had on the '57 was high quality, never gave me any problems.
I would never use a "clear" fuel filter, no matter who made it.
I pieced together a custom set up with their various elbows and connectors. The system works great, but the joint connectors aren't the best. Need to be checking them fairly regularly or they come apart.
I installed the Spectre setup so that I could run a stock 82-84 fiberglass hood. I have had the car since new and it has been garage stored since new. I replaced the entire drive-train (engine / transmission / rear-end / brakes / suspension) over a couple year build. I don't know how much performance the air intake is worth but the car runs very strong. Attached a couple other photos. The inside headlights have been replaced with mesh and the in-line air filters are right behind. the
