NEED HELP: Quadrajet carb fuel return line???
NEED HELP: Quadrajet carb fuel return line???
Hello...I have recently swapped my 3.1 v6 to a 350 carbed motor. There is a gold spout on the front of the quadrajet carb that shoots gas onto the intake when I pump the gas pedal while trying to start it. It doesn't happen all the time...just when it's not enough gas in it to start. I'm thinking a fuel return line should be there but I can't figure out where it hooks up to. Run it from the spout on the front of the carb to where??? Or can I just plug it up? It runs fine while driving...no gas leaks while driving or at idle at all. Please help!!! Any info would be very helpful! Oh and it's a 1990 RS t top.

A picture of exactly what you're talking about would help a bit. Which "Spout" is spewing gas?
Do you have a mechanical Qjet or a CC Qjet that was swapped in? I'm assuming mechanical but I want to be sure.
What fuel pump are you running? Are you running a block mounted mechanical or in-tank electric pump that came with the car?
If you are running an electric fuel pump, do you have a fuel pressure regulator? What is your fuel pressure set at? No more than 5psi for the carb.
The carburetor should never "spew" gas anywhere if it's done up properly.

Thank you for replying Ozz1967.....to answer your questions...I have a mechanical Qjet.
I don't know what kind of pump I'm running...but its electric and in the tank.
I have a fuel pressure regulator but its not adjustable and I don't see anything on it to let me know what psi it is.
I have circled in yellow the spout that shot gas out of. I've tried looking for pics and its hard to find Qjet carb pics on third gens. I haven't had much luck.

1. The piece you circled is a vacuum port. Plug it for now. I do see that many other ports are plugged. This Is fine.
2. Can you take a picture of your regulator? in-tank pumps, especially those designed for fuel injection, run 40PSI or better. Carbs can only handle about 5psi. You must get a return style regulator such as a "Mallory 4309". This has the feed and return lines on it, you just need to hook them up.
Mallory 4309
3. You need to get a pressure gauge. The Mallory unit has a port on it that you can use to measure the pressure. Holley 0-15psi pressure gauge

That's the bowl vent that connects to the charcoal canister to capture gas fumes while the vehicle sits between drives. Gas should not be spewing from it. Check your booster pump and ensure it is shooting gas into the primary throats when the plunger is pressed. You should be able to see this. Possible check valve for the pump is stuck or missing.

I also found this pic and I see a lot of carbed cars have this little silver thing hooked to the fuel lines....is this thing what I need? I have looked at them online and they all have electrical connectors...my car is not hooked up to any ecu so I don't know what to connect it to for it to work properly. I'm at such a loss...I wonder if I can plug it instead? Will it hurt anything?
I circled the little thing the fuel lines are running to in the pic below:

I'm so sorry man...I have a mechanical fuel pump & no regulator. I thought I still had an in tank pump because I hear it when I turn the car on. It whines for about 3 seconds. So apparently it's still powering on but the fuel lines from the carb go the mechanical fuel pump. I cannot see what brand the fuel pump is though.

I'm not sure if your overall pressure would change running the mechanical after the electrical in-tank, but, it's not good as I mentioned earlier. Still, with stuff spewing out of your carb, it's probably an adjustment that needs to be made internally to the carb as NAF suggested.
