Switching from TPI to Carb - '88 IROC

So I'm starting to build a 383 stroker and completely replacing the engine (I have a 305 TPI). I have a few questions (yes, I searched, just confirming).

All of my factory gauges will still work with the ECM gone, yes?

Also, I'm planning a T-56 swap (goal is 500-ish HP, so the T-5 will surely grenade if I keep it), what's the easiest way to keep my factory speedometer and make sure it's accurate? I also plan on switching to 4.11 gears in the differential.

Preferred fuel pump workaround?

And what's the preferable way to wire the fans in?

Is this a track only car? 4.11's will have your screaming going down the road. (even more than 3.73's for that matter).

If your car has the mechanical speedo this link will help:

i have my fans wired to a toggle switch that i turn on and off when needed. i swapped a 350 in place of the stock 305 tbi. i used the stock fuel pump with a regulator to kick the pressure down to 5.5 psi. i would also agree that 4.11 will be pretty high in the rpm's while driving. is this a track only car or street strip?

I had a 69 Z28 with 4:11s and it turned about 3500 RPM at 65mph. I could almost watch the fuel gage needle move to empty.

I did the sawp to a89 GTA last summer.and just wired a switch to the fans.
And as for a fuel pump I took a file line and brought it to the passenger side and used a mechanical pump.
And I removed all wiring from the ecu harness and the gauges still work.

Use a fan switch that screws into one of he cylinder heads. Summit sells the for around $40+shipping. Wire the radiator fan relay's ground wire the the switch. I did that after initially using a rocker switch to control the fan and it works great.

Re: Switching from TPI to Carb - '88 IROC

Why do you want to ditch the TPI? Perhaps you can eliminate the TPI bottleneck while still keeping the advantage of direct port fuel injection while switching to a "carb" intake...
Professional Products Hurricane or Edelbrock Victor E from Summit.

Or possibly cheaper on http://www.ebay.com/itm/SBC-Small-Block-Chevy-High-Rise-Hurricane-Aluminum-MPFI-EFI-Intake-Manifold-350-/390773513756?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item5afbea9e1c&vxp=mtr.

I agree 4.11's will be fine. I also have a t56 with 3.73 and I can cruise at 75 with the tach at around 1800 to 2000 rpm's. Also for the speedo you will need a Dakota Digital recalibration box that for me took place of the vss buffer. It may be different on your year not sure. You are able to fine tune the signal.

Thanks for the input guys.

Yeah, T56, so with the stock 245/50/R16's, in 6th gear I'd be at like 1800rpm with 4.11's.

I want to switch to carb for the simplicity. I realize both carburetor and fuel injection have their merits, but if I want to do the high performance FI thing, I'll either do an LS1 swap down the road or do something MegaSquirt. The harness in my car was messed with something nice so I want to avoid the headache and just go old school.

Plus, I have a complete 350 (2 bolt main) chilling in my garage with a bad crank (spun rod bearing) and no carb. It was pushing 375 in the Nova it was yanked from, and that was with a dinky 2-barrel.

I'm picking up a 350 (4 bolt main) with a 400 crank and 202 heads for 200 bucks from a buddy of mine.

Re: Switching from TPI to Carb - '88 IROC

For the fan use a temp switch that grounds to turn on a relay for the fan

Read
https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/cool...-fan-come.html

and read

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/cool...tched-pns.html

You can get most of the parts at autozone.

Get a 20A fuse holder

40A relay
http://www.autozone.com/autozone/acc...er=203873_0_0_

Relay holder or spade lugs

Wire

SW### sensor and pigtail then wire it all up

Or something like this

Here this may help. The question has come up a few times lately so I made this. This will create an auto on 210F fan circuit. Swap out SW555 for a different on temp
