Carb Swap from a Tpi?

Hello guy's

I have a 88 gta with the digital gauge 5.0 5speed from what i was told it was all original but i see it might not be do to the mottor having a carb . well any ways the car does turn over but does not stay on to long and shut off if not giving it gas and holding it . i added a in tank fuel pump to it and blocked of the mechanical pump it has on the side of the mottor block that i belive might not be the original mottor to the bird. Im in the process of puting a return style pump . the distuber is computer controlled with a 4m4e carb but is it all original or did the previous owner just decided to leave it alone after he put the carb And did not finsh the carb swap .

I have a none control distributor and ill buy a carb if i have to b/c i read some were that the m4me can not be use with out the computer . and i dont kno if the computer is the original to the block and carb.

Thank you guys.

What's the VIN say?

Last year for a carb was 1987. VIN will tell you the year of the car, and the original engine. 8th digit is the code for the engine. H - 305 4bbl, G - 305 HO 4bbl, F - 305 TPI, 8 - 350 TPI, E - Toilet Bowl, S - 2.8 liters of fury.

Car and tittle says F for the lb9 fuel injection and thats why i think the previous owner wanted to carb swap it but i really have no clue if the carb work with the factory computer which i doubt it . so can i carb swap it and what about with the digital dash will it still work ?

Re: Carb Swap from a Tpi?

CCCarb work with a TPI computer? Not much chance of that happening. Not much chance of the CCCarb working without it's correct wiring harness, distributor, and ECM. No big deal, just get a non-compucarb, and a vacuum advance HEI distributor. A Quadrajet from an earlier Chevy car will bolt up to everything fine and won't require the computer.

As far as the digital dash, you'll need all the sensors and wiring that would normally feed it to be connected, regardless of what engine is under the hood. I'm not sure how much of the digital dash (if any) requires the LB9 ECM. Seeing as how you could get the digital dash in the last few years of carburetors I'm sure there's a way to do it, it's just a matter of how much pain it'll incur to your ***.

Looks like a fantastic recipe for an aircleaner sitting too tall to close the hood.

You would be a lot better off with a remanned Quadrajet from something like a 1980 Caprice. Mostly because a Qjet fits the stock spreadbore intake, fits the throttle cable, fits the TV cable, fits under the hood, and arguably runs better and is more efficient than Orville Redelbrocker's fancy Carter 4bbl.

Re: Carb Swap from a Tpi?

Yeah, that's a lot more likely to work with all the stock thirdgen parts with the minimum headaches.

Re: Carb Swap from a Tpi?

Yeah, one line is the pressure line, the other is the return.
