I carb can respond better to modification like a cam, and can be tuned to work with the modifications. So yes, some of the power will be from having a carb.

I have been told by more then a couple people that swapping to a carb from TBi will alone gain Hp. Depending on the size carb. Typically anything over 500CFM you'll gain some HP.

You will lose torque across the whole RPM range but you'll get a few ponies in the upper RPM's over the TBI unit. Right now it might not be worth the extra cash.......

oh and its really only necessary to change to carb for extra ponies until you change other things like cam, heads and intake.

And on a cold start it will stumble like crazy for usually the first 5-10 minutes of driving.

The loss in Torque probably doesn't add up to more than 10 lb-ft. I'd say go for a 600CFM, you'll probably pick up ~10 ponies and most likely it will have improved throttle response and better top end power. You're going to lose MPG of course, but that's how the cookie crumbles.

If you set the choke right you won't have any stumble after a cold start. If you tune it correctly and don't get too big of a carb you won't lose any power on the bottom end. Keep in mind that you must use a different intake/distributer with the carb, and that will affect the whole powerband--you can't just change the tbi to carb by itself.

i know ill have to change the intake and distributer...im probably just gonna go with one of the summit HEI distributers (150$) and a performer intake from edelbrock....only thing is i decided i may still go with a 350 this summer and they sell the one i want for 2200$ thats will all the rotating assembly and heads...the heads are vortexs tho so the intake would be worthless if i do that so i havent decided what i wanna do yet...does anyplace sell 350s with just the rotating assembly? no heads and intake? if i could find one ill just go ahead and put vortex heads and intake on the 305 uintil i get the money for the 350 then swap everything over...what you all think

Sounds like you are looking for a 350 short block--lots of places have them. If you are talking about the good GM stock heads, they are called vortec.
