OK, I finally decided, now where can I get the best priced Quadrajet (mechanical)

I am looking for a mechanical quadrajet either new or rebuilt. I am no carb guru so I want a complete one. Any suggestions?

You basically have two choices, like you said: Get a rebuilt, for which you will have no core; or a new one, the only choice of which is an Edelbrock.

If you go rebuilt, specify something like an 70 Chevelle 350. The late 60's 327/350 would be fine as well.

The right Edelbrock would probably be the 1904, which has the electric choke. You could also go with their RPM q-jet, but the extra cost probably won't help performance any. The 1904 will flow more than enough for your 350.

Either way, you'll probably have to do some tuning to get it to run like you want, so get a good book and start studying. If you have the money, you'd probably be happier with the Edelbrock.

Get the carter AFB it is nealy identical to the edelbrock carb. The q-jet and the carter is not the same carb but they are similar designs. the carter is like $233 the edelbrock is $250 but those are emissions carbs and i belive that scoggin may be able to give you a better price. Or check with a parts store for a carb. I bought a carb for my old truck it was a single barrel but it was a rochester remanufactured by holley and it worked great. it was $85 but a q-jet can probly be had cheaper than that man. rebuilding a carb is not all that hard it is just some trial and error. we can get one from a junk yard try our luck and if it works out you saved some money if not trade the core in on a new carb.

I could not find a quadrajet for under $250 rebuilt in this whole town. I ended up getting a new Edelbrock 600cfm from scoggen for $219.

You wouldn't have. I would have called Cliff Ruggles but his Qjet's run around $400 without a core.

For others who come searching for such a thing, wanting a factory carb, look for 7029202. 69-70 Chevelle 350 w/ 186 heads, automatic. 07 & 08 are the correspomding 396 #s but don't have quite as much tuning flexibility as the 350 ones... good carbs, but they start out with certain passages already too large for small blocks. Outside the tuning range, as it were.

Good luck finding one that isn't ate up with dissimilar-metal electrolysis, ham-fisted knuckle-dragging mouth-breathing gorillas, throttle shaft wear, "improvements", etc. But, back in the late 70s / early 80s, that was what we'd scour the buzzard nests for.

Failing that, a Holley 6210. A FINE carb. Closest thing you can get to a Q-jet in throttle response, fit, and gas mileage; yet gives Holley tunability, power, and of course, NEW castings.

I got a carb from guaranteed carburetors. They are in Florida. Great price and quality. Good to deal with.
