Does a chip do anything for a CCC'd f-body?

I searched the archives but couldn't find anyone asking this... I was pretty sure all a chip does for a computer controlled Q-jet engine is advance the timing a bit. Is that true?

A guy that I was talking to at Autozone said he had put a stage 2 chip in his 83 CC firebird and thought it was a defective chip because it did nothing he sent it back to jet and they told him it was fine and he needed to advance his timing to take effect. whell long story short he got his money back.

For the amount of money those overrated shelf chips are going for, you can get better results from investing that money in other parts of the car. The Hypertech chip for my TBI car didn't even do that much, and the ECM on a CC carb vehicle has even less control over performance. You won't gain anything noticeable by putting a "performance" chip in a CC carb car.
Put one in if you can get it for free, that's how I see it.

Mine came with one. Didn't know I had it till I had my codes scanned. I really don't think it does crap.

My car had the hypertech chip in it when I got it. If it had made any real difference, it must've been hella slow beforehand. I really doubt it did much...

Chips don't do anything. What you need is the discontinued Edelbrock Micro-Plus timing computer, it is worth 15-20hp on a stock LG4. The problem is where do you find one?

I've got a Micro Plus unit in like new condition that I would consider selling. Anyone interested? I'd even through in a used stock electronic distributor (no cap, rotor, or coil) in good condition if the price was right.

I guess for the archive record... I got a Hypertec Stage II chip from a friend. All it did was throw a code after a few minutes or it reached 100F (whichever came first). I figured out it was looking for a knock sensor... which my 84LG4 didn't have. I took it out and soon after replaced the engine which made it a lot faster!

Great, thanks, guys. So instead of a chip, the timing should just be advanced a bit on an LG4? The LG4's have mechanical fans, right? So a chip wouldn't even turn the fan on earlier?

My 86 IROC LG4 has an electric fan. The chip is now 5 years old. It is a hypertech thermomaster that to use properly I had to put in a 160* thermostat and hypertech's fan switch to turn the fan on earlier. I didn't notice a difference but that was the only mod on the car 5 years ago. I hope that answered at least the electric fan question.

Even with electric fans, the chip doesn't turn it on for CC carb'd engines. That's strictly the function of the thermo fan switch.

One of these days, I'm going to have to do back-to-back runs with my "performance" chip and the stock chip. I do know I passed emissions with the "performance" chip, and can't complain about performance or mileage with it.

I called Hyoertech about this a while ago. I asked the guy if it was worth it to put a chip in the LG4. He told me that the comps on our cars do so little that it wasn't even worth it. SO...if a salesman from Hypertech is telling me NOT to buy his product I don't think that its worth the money.
