Solenoid release for top cover.
Hi Everyone,
To open the rear panel on the convertible I hacve been using the pull wires behind the rear seat. I can see solenoids though. How do these work? Where is the switch?
There is a switch in the centre console which was all corroded up.I took it apart and now I can hear it operating a relay. Is this for the top or the trunk asd neither one opens when I press it.
Does anyone have a diagram for the top electrics.
Thanks,
Alex

The switch in the center of the console releases the tonneau cover on the verts, it is the trunk release on all the other camaros.

From memory, an orange wire leaves the relay inder the console....it goes under your drivers seat, to the trunk to the switch on the hatch pull down assembly...it then gets converted to a red wire that goes to the passenger side in a plastic loom to the solenoid...and it is 'tapped' with another red wire that goes UNDER the rear set to the drivers side...
Put a volt meter on the red wire on the passenger side if get 12 volts when you hit the switch, then check driver's side if not 12 volts, then wire bad under the rear seat...
If no 12 at the passenger side, check in your trunk to see if you get 12 volts on the switch on the pull down assembly.....
If you don't have it there then you probably have an open wire between the switch and the relay....

Here's a newb question for ya...
I've seen some custom Cad ideas for my Deville, and these can relate just as easily to Firebird/Camaros, etc... When a customizer shaves door handles and trim for a clean look, usually it's said door operation comes about via solenoids... How do these work exactly, in all varieties? I've never been enlightened and I'd also like an idea of cost on a two or foor door car...thanks in advance, guys!

Solenoid operation
BillSpeed.
The doors would operate much similar to the electric release on the Tonneau cover. The diff would be that they would be activated by either a hidden button or keychain remote.

I think they did these shaved custom touches in the 70s as well, did they work by remote back then? I have a hard time believing but it's likely there was a concealed button, but I've never know where...is it up to the owner where it goes? I'd find some old example pics. Recall my firebird has no solenoid release that I was ever aware of. I found my Chilton manual has some top replacement instr. I'll have to compare to the one I got with the top I bought

Hi Everyone,
I got the torneau cover working. Two things were wrong, the switch was not working. I took the switch apart and cleaned up the contacts.I could then hear the relay working but still no power to the solenoids.
I then traced back thru all of the wiring and found it to be disconnected in the trunk from what would be the hatch release on a hardtop car. Reconnected up and everything works.

The weather is still sub 30 degrees most of the time here but I'd like pics of where the electrics are on these....close detail so I can make it out... I'll be looking mine over as I take new pics
