Trunk motor magically began working

I have had a hell of a time getting my pulldown motor to work on my 89 vert.
I have kind of gave up on it for the last year as I was focusing on the engine and trans replacement that I just got finished.
I have had a consistent drain on the battery, and I usually keep a trickle charger on it while it has sat in the garage, I figured it was that trunk motor.
Well today, I was working on a sub box for a client.. and I heard the trunk motor engage across the garage, and my trunk closed and locked.
I grabbed the key and unlocked it, then it closed again!
Thing hasn't worked for years!
It healed itself!
What is up with that?
I didn't even have it on the charger.

The striker-sensing switch is going bad. The contacts in it finally worked and it energized the hatch motor.

1986-90 coupes and 87-90 convertibles had the pull-down unit standard. Since yours was built prior to that no pull-down unit. 1991 model year had two styles. Early model year 1991 coupes & 'verts still had the pull-down unit with a metal frame. Later in 91 GM changed to a pull-down unit that had a tan plastic frame. The two styles are not compatible. For the coupes the pull-down unit became an option. The late 91-92 convertibles got a slam-latch for the trunk.

Your 1984 has the metal slam-latch that was used on early thirdgen F-Bodies. Any idea which of the dozen or so other companies that did convertible conversions prior to ASC's version did yours?

I had to fix mine a while back and its a 92. It would not unlatch when i turned the key. All you really have to do is play the the limiting switches ( they are just pieces of metal). All i had to do was bend one of the pieces and it worked perfectly fine. I am sure that might help you.

Some 91 and all 92 used a different pull-down unit with a tan colored plastic frame than the earlier models. The earlier pull-down units have a metal frame.
