Re: Removing black tonneau cover

If I'm not mistaken it is held on by double sided tape. I was trying to take mine off the other day and thats what I come across. Rick

Re: Removing black tonneau cover

I was going to ask the same thing.... I want to do some touchup paint on the cover without taping off the rest of the car... With the double sided tape, I think I'd be worried about cracking the damn thing pulling it up.... Has anyone had good luck pulling theirs up... and then replacing it??

I'd like to replace my tonneau cover. Where do you get new ones at?

Re: Removing black tonneau cover

no new ones are available so if yours is messed up it's time to refinish. I have seen just the faux leather tonneau pieces for sale on Ebay so there is a few that have taken them off successfully. Just be real careful I am going to be pulling mine off here pretty soon since the corners behind the doors are kinda soft and it seems like one is broken. I will brobably take it off and reinforce with fiberglass then recover it.

Re: Removing black tonneau cover

It's glued on. The glue is zig-zagged so once you get and area started it's pretty easy to pop the whole thing off. I recovered mine with grey vinyl to match the 4th gen dash. It's a fiber-board type piece that easily fixed with anything (I used JB-stick for the few chips I had).

Re: Removing black tonneau cover

wipe all of it down with acetone after you remove as much of the adhesive(with a scraper be careful not to gouge the piece) as you can and get heavyweight vinyl and use some 3m high strength adhesive and lay the vinyl on top of it and roll it out so there is no air bubbles then roll it around to the bottom just like ASC did.

Re: Removing black tonneau cover

I got mine off today all I can say is WOW I must have got one with the "experimental glue" for being 20 years old that stuff wouldn't come loose. I had it popped loose on the corner and it never broke loose until I was about 3" from the opposite side. definitely not too easy on mine.

Re: Removing black tonneau cover

I was able to get mine off with a long screw driver. As I pushed it along, it would pop the top loose from the glue. It actually came off pretty easily, as the glue seems to stick to the body of the car much better than to the fiberglass top. I have some serious sanding to do to get the glue off the car.

Now, I was thinking of using 3M double stick automotive tape to reattach it, putting it mostly on the perimeter. Any thoughts?

Can you get the glue off the car without ruining the tonneau paint. I just want to recover mine. Nothing wrong with the paint on mine.

Re: Removing black tonneau cover

Once I got the tonneau cover off, there was glue, sometimes an eighth of an inch thick. I was able to get most of it off using a plastic scraper and in certain spots a razor scraper. It seems the paint was scratched up prior to the cover being glued on the first time, probably to get the glue to stick. It took me an hour or so to get the glue off the car. I was going to repaint that part with trim paint, but it seems useless as the tonneau cover will cover it all up. I have, at this point, decided to use black silicon caulking. I have no real reason why, except it dries flexible, black and waterproof. The 3M double sided adhesive was over $30 at my local paint supply store, and I was concerned that it would make contact before the piece was completely in place. The stuff is very sticky.
