Did they really only build 729 RS convertibles? I just picked one up for $3200 and then saw the production numbers. Shouldn't this car we worth a whole lot more than that?

729 units does make this car hard to find but not truly rare (like if there were under 50 made). Of coarse that number is low enough to have some influence but not nearly as much as condition. That would still be the #1 ranking criteria.

By now I would hazard to guess that half of that 729 now resides in the boneyard or has already been crushed...

Very likely true as that is a given effect on all aging vehicles. Fewer built would result in fewer left as time goes by. Unfortunately, you would need to prove (with documentation) the number still existing and in what condition for the remaining amount to have an effect on a car's value. And even at 729, that's still not low enough and is still anyone's guess as to how many are remaining.
That's why when you get down to actual production numbers of 50 (an arbitrary number) or less, it will have an immediate and direct influnce on value.

Still a very nice and unique ride!
