possible third brake light solution

I have been maulling over a way to repair our third brake lights since they are so hard to get, and so prone to damage in the circuite board area, I will pursue this if there is enough interist,(cost for one is a little higher than I want to pay) the only hitch is your len HAS to be good the things that make you say Hmmmm?

I know I can duplicate them... I would need a complete one, and they would not be cheap. But I have made replacement Lens' for Ferrari's before...

Re: possible third brake light solution

my original idea was to refit the "Lights" with LED's, both of my lenses are good. let me look into the lens issue a little. I have an idea!! let me work it, I'll build a prototype and post results here in a week or so.

Re: possible third brake light solution

Now my bulbs are fine exce[pt for one which i believe i found a spot to buy them from they are shipping me a few to try out. The dealer told me I had to buy the whole fixture which i found hard to believe.
But it looks like somone glued the red lens to the plastic housing? Not sure if thats the way its suppose to be or is the lens a seperate piece from the the housing?

yup that is how they come new, you should have some small screws to remove to get to the bulbs, "remove the circuite board" did the dealer think he could get them? I am under the impression that they are no longer in production?

Re: possible third brake light solution

The dealer told me i could not buy 1 light bulb that i had to replace the whole strip bulbs and all didnt make sense to me but they did tell me the plastic srip that the bulbs plug into are discontinued.

What i need is the red lens and the whole plastic housing loos like somone tightened up the mounting screws on the 2 ends and cracked the red portion of the lens. I have been looking everywhere but now its off to the junk yards i guess.

Good luck with the Junk yards, if you find any extras pick them up, you will be able to move them here pretty easy. I sold my extra in 1 day.

the lens is what I am working on a replacement for. I need feedback on an idea, I am working on a billet piece that could be painted to match your car, or left clear if you like, with LED lights, also brainstorming an LED upgrade for the tail lights ??? any interest out there?? I have no Idea of the cost yet, but looking into it.

Re: possible third brake light solution

I've done a little research regarding LED's, I'd like to replace my side marker lights and my third brake light, just to see how I get along with them. I found someone on here last year who advertised that they could convert one's third brake light from bulbs to LED's, and the price was not all that bad, as I recall. I'll see if I can find the site, determine if it's still up and running, and post the link to you if it is . . .
