hi, and welcome aboard... pics would help a lot but just going by the details your giving ill say the car might be worth around 3k b/c of the convertible top, but with pics we would be able to give a better ballpark price.

Re: NEW GIRL HERE!!HELP ME OUT!!

I think you would really enjoy the convertible. Make sure the top works properly (it is manual). Have the steering checked along with the brakes and transmission and that would be most of your heavy expenses. I really enjoy mine and I am sure you would too. It is different from driving a larger truck though so take that into account. Pics would be nice.

Re: NEW GIRL HERE!!HELP ME OUT!!

Hi and welcome. Could you please refrain from yelling (using all capital letters).

I hope that if you are interested in the Camaro, that you're ready to step into what is likely the most extreme opposite type of vehicle from your 4x4! Be ready to be looking up to everyone vs down and having your a$$ feel like it's almost dragging on the ground!
We love'm and I think you will too. If you trade for this ride, be sure to appraoch it from an open mind.

PS; have a trusted mechanic of your choice go over it well (drivetrain, brakes, electrical, etc) first. Good luck.

Re: NEW GIRL HERE!!HELP ME OUT!!

I have only driven one camaro, it was a 1999 v6. I liked that it had speed which my 1995 lifted dodge ram does not. Also I have only driven about five different cars in my lifetime. Most vehicles that I have driven have been pickup trucks. Im not exactly to sure what to expect out of owning a car, as I have only owned pickups.

I will have somebody go over the car with me who is a mechanic. I know that my truck runs and drives great, so i do not want to get screwed over on anything. Im sure these cars do not handle so great in the snow, but i do have another pickup that i will be keeping.

Im trying to post bigger pics, im hoping they show up better. Once again, thanks to everybody for their advice!

P.S. the camaro has an automatic transmission

Re: NEW GIRL HERE!!HELP ME OUT!!

Still difficult to say. The car looks like it could use a wash in these pictures.

It´s a convertible. If it has manual trans, runs well and does not have rust I´d say it´s worth $3000 alright.

Make sure to bring that mechanic friend of yours along and have him check:

Wheel wells in and out
Footwell area
Suspension bushings

If the car was maintained well these will be good, if not, these are the areas where you´ll find rust and worn parts.

Make sure the airdam is there, have a look at the coolant overflow tank to get an indication of whether or not the car runs well or runs hot. If it has A/C switch it on and ensure the fan spins.

Other then that, check the obvious. Steering slack, dampers/springs, brakes, transmission oil, engine oil (fluids should all look clean, no crusting on filler caps)

Re: NEW GIRL HERE!!HELP ME OUT!!

I would check the floorboards, both under the car and under the carpet.......

if that has sat outside at all, It will have had water damage at some point.

Also note that someone has removed the ac compressor. Just be aware of that.

good luck with it

Re: NEW GIRL HERE!!HELP ME OUT!!

87 player bird is right and wrong. Chevy did not officially make an 86 Iroc convertiblebut there were prototypes made for the 87 introduction if this were one of them it would bump the value up tremendously but chances are it is a dealer ordered car which looking at the pics you posted would put the value at $3k-$4200 that is an estimate without seeing the under side of the car, couple oher places to check for rust just because the pic shows snow is right where your feet sit while driving and around the drainage plug at the foot well in the back passenger floor boards also if there was ever any mention of the car being painted look on the tonneau cover to see if the wear sticker was replaced.otherwise the rer bow weatherstripping will wear a line in it. Looking at the pics it appears to be an ASC conversyun which when Chevt officially started doing the conversion is who they went with. I have some stuff trim wise from my 87 if you nrrf them I would get rid of to you if you nrrf themsince you mention the 305 was recently rebuilt I would see if your mechanic friend has a compression tester and check out the cylinders on it to verify.as far as them being bad in the snow yes this one would be but not for the reason you think when I had mt 87 Iroc t-top I used it as a daily driver for three OH winters which is similar to yours but MI is normally a little harsher yeah check the tires good too I had low profile FireHawks on mine they made a world of difference but cost me over $700 for the tires with mounting and balancing and an alignment. but the verts are bad in the winter because of air leaks so it is cold no problem in the summer. since you mention driving a v6 99 and it being quick you won't be completely blown away with the 305 unless it they installed a more aggressive cam or taller rear gears. I think that is all I can think of but if you have any questions feel free to pm me. also look for any missing pieces before hand as that is one of the hardest thing is finding this stuff for an early vert but like I said I have some of it and an not real far from you. one thing I do not have anymore though is the linkage style tonneau release so hopefully it is still attached under the tonneau cover but if not it can be converted to thr cable style. If you end up trading you will be happy with it in my opinion after you get used to the height difference.anyway sorry this is so long but it should help you out. here's a good quote for anyone that reads it"don't ever question your decisions because by then it is too late, instead question your judgement while making those decisions, then you still have time." like I said feel free to pm me if you need anything.Sorry if anything is spelled wrong also I just had brain surgery the 1st of this month and my vision isn't completely back to normal yet. good luck Emily.

UPDATE!!! This car has a tag on the drivers side door that states that in 1991 it was altered by ASC

What does this mean? Is it not an original 86 camaro convertible?

ASC is one of the companies that converted these cars to convertables when new so you don't have to worry about the quailty of work on the conversion, all it means is that at some point one of the owners decided they liked the car too much to part with it but wanted a convertable so they had it converted

Does this mean that the car is worth less than 3,000 in the shape its in? also does anybody have any good advice on upgrades for the car, to make it faster...without dumping tons of cash into it?

Re: NEW GIRL HERE!!HELP ME OUT!!

you got it it mrans it is a conversion car just as fun though but it is kind of better because they would have used later parts which in my opinion were a little bit better design on most of it. I would sill trade. the top was probably originally black instead of tan but tan looks a little better I think black wouldn't give it much to break up the color.it will make it a little easier finding any parts you need I can help if you need it. It looks pretty good but I haven't seen any interior pics

Re: NEW GIRL HERE!!HELP ME OUT!!

no third gen convertubles were 350 iroc trans am or any other sub group unless someone swapped it out. akso Emily if they aren't there already you will want sub frame connectors on it if you trade. Top Down Solutionshas a good set or Spohn but price is close on both spohn is $199 plus shipping and top down are $184 I would use either one you want to have them welded in if thet rae not already installed.

Re: NEW GIRL HERE!!HELP ME OUT!!

so no convertables were 350's interesting. learn something new everday. i see you live in michigan, so do i. so a word of advise is that definitely check the underside of the car very well. check the wheel wells everthing. tap on the side to make sure its not bondoed over or anything. bondo and steel make very different sounds if you can listen for them. id also ask what his maintance habits are. fluids and everything changed regularily etc. just from one fellow michgander to another. some of these rot out very well out here

ALRIGHT....so im officially lost on the subject now. Ive heard take it, dont take it....

I suppose all im looking for now is a vote..take it or not!

And to clear anything up with anybody on what i would be giving him on trade

1995 dodge ram 1500
4x4
125,xxx on a 5.9l engine

power windows/locks/mirrors
roll bar
ram guards
6 kc lights total
detroit lockers (front and rear)
6inch bds lift kit
true duel exhaust without cats
custom rear bumper

AS FAR AT THE BAD ON MY TRUCK...
cracked windshield, fender rust, cab corner rust, no tail gate straps, needs transfer case seal.

TRUCK RUNS GREAT. DOESNT LEAK OR BURN ANY OIL. ITS A BEAST AND WOULD GO THROUGH ANYTHING.

Re: NEW GIRL HERE!!HELP ME OUT!!

buying this car means some sacrifice.
1. If it gets worse than 2.5in of snow your not going anywhere.
2. There is little ground clearance which means you have to be very vigilant as to what you are driving over.
3. Finally dont expect a clear licence anymore these cars go compared to a truck.

but has a load of good to make up for it.
1. they handle fantastic
2. they are very fast out of the box
3. they can kill just about any four banger with all those stickers and loud exhaust.
4. they are also just fun to cruise in and they turn many heads
5. it is also fun to get that peel out from a light.

personally i wouldnt trade anything for my trans am gta and i think that you will defenently enjoy this car and i would go for it.

also a good k&n filter, tps tune, plugs and high flow catalytic converter will add a nice little bit of proformance without a lot of cash.

Re: NEW GIRL HERE!!HELP ME OUT!!

didnt see it mentioned, but my observations

your vin says the car is a lg4 4bbl car, the picture you posted is a TPI (tuned port injection) engine. So the car has a engine swap, or sombody put a tpi intake on a carb long block. It also looks like the emissions and AC are all gone. If the wiring wqas all hacked up when this was done, it can be a real nightmare later if there are issues, and it will never pass inspection without the emissions parts

however, it does seem the car has the fuel lines on the driverside, which an 86 carb car would not have. So im a little confused by what im seeing.

I would pass on this car, it seems a bit weird and questionable.

your vin says the car is a lg4 4bbl car, the picture you posted is a TPI (tuned port injection) engine.

I would pass on this car, it seems a bit weird and questionable.
theres no emissions in michigan

Re: NEW GIRL HERE!!HELP ME OUT!!

it does seem a little "off" or wierd. but thats a car i would deff like to have lol. so obviously by comming to this website on a trade like that, majority are gonna say take the camaro...considering thats what we all like . but to be open minded and not biased, the big dodge may be a keeper. just depends on if you even have a slight passion for 3rdgens. if it were me, i would trade, but also if it were me, i would have never owned or prolly will never own a truck like that lol.

if its dollars to dollars, its pretty close.

I have seen quite a few convertibles but never one the VIN shows a 3 for factory convertible and an 8 for original 350 (5.7 tpi) I did see one 88 that was factory 350 and sent to ASC for the conversion but it did not have the 3 in the body code.

Z28's & IROCZ's had (depending on the year) everything from LG4 305 4bbl, L69 305 4bbl HO, L03 305 TBI, LB9 305 TPI and L98 350 TPI!

350's were never available in a "factory" Camaro convertible. They did however become an option on the non-convertibles Z28's & IROCZ's in '87 (~50 were made in '86 but they were not part of regular public sales).

The IROCZ was an option on the Z28 in '86. Because they were both very similar, the VIN doesn't determine anything. The best way to confirm what it might be is to look for the SPID decal (RPO list label). In that year ('86) it is typically found in the console. If the decal is there, and the VIN on it matches the one on the car then the RPO Z28 is obvious, and to be an IROCZ the RPO B4Z must be there. Remember we're talking about this '86 Camaro.

Not an accurate statement at all. More specifically there was never a "factory" (Chevy autherized ASC conversion) 3rd gen Camaro convertible ever made with a 350 available to the general public. However, if you had a Firebird, you actually did have a few options with a 350 in a convertible. Many (as in '89) were ASC conversions for dealers. You could get a 350 in Formula, GTA and even the TransAm convertible. Pontiac convertibles became "official" later in '91.

Re: NEW GIRL HERE!!HELP ME OUT!!

Very true. The car in question is an '86, and as such, so is most of the data above.

Volumes could be written if we were to break down all the data and differences for all model options for all 3rd gen years. But then we'd be getting of topic.

Looks like she might have decided against this one anyway.

I always talk about the official stuff as in public sales I could care less about the stuff the overpriced gm execs could order If I got $1 million dollar bonus(in 86 it is more now)(can you say why do all the cars these days cost so much but are made of thermoformed plastic ?) ((sooner or later to scrap a car we will have to take it all the way apart so we can recycle the shell and scrap the underside and some of the motor, alot of intakes and valve covers are already plastic oh excuse me I better use the correct name "composite"If you really want the correct name it is the throw away because it is akmost always warped manifold.

every 6 months I would have had a big block convertible why stop at a 350? and a solid frame under it that tucked inside the floorboards so you had just as much ground clearence.
