'84 Camaro IROC-Z Conv by ASC...or is it?

There is a lot of weirdness going on with this car. First, I had never seen an '84 F-body convertible by ASC. The center-mount rear brake light suggests it was converted in '86 or later. Other things on this car seem not to match an '84. Makes me wonder if it might not be a stolen (or salvaged) car that had the VIN of an '84 attached. Just speculating.

I wanted to throw this at others here to see if you thought this car was really an '84.

Re: '84 Camaro IROC-Z Conv by ASC...or is it?

Just by a quick look at the pics...

Either the body has been changed (different nose/tail lights/ground fx), or the dash gauges has been swapped, or a later model car has been retitled as an earlier one.

What strikes me as odd is the later model body & early gauges, which suggest a body swap (easier to do). But I'm also not sure how later that gauge setup lasted, so maybe it is correct for the body? I know the gauges are correct for 84 (i have a spare set for a 84) and I know the tail lights & nose are a much later style, so something is no adding up. No way a 84 got that nose or tail lights.

That's a carb'd engine. That 85 m.p.h. cluster lasted till 1987 and then when the T.B.I. came out in 1988 it went to 115.

Just saw the Ebay pics. The interior is the 1987 custom interior and all those holes in front of the passenger on the dash is where the 20th Anniversary map pocket goes. All 1987 Camaro convertibles got them. The lg4 carb. engine was the base engine for Z28's and IROC's in 1987.

Re: '84 Camaro IROC-Z Conv by ASC...or is it?

The speedo is incorrect if its supposed to be a 84.
Should be a double needle showing mph on one end kms on the other.
Wrong door panels and seats for a supposed 84 too.

Is that a 5.0 HO sticker on the rear bumper?
I don't see a HO sticker on the rockers. Looks like they say tuned port (can't see good)
No dual snorkel air cleaner either...............

Note the mileage turnback/difference in the Autocheck.............

Its a Frankenstein car. But looks good and a ASC conversion to boot and prob.
a good buy depending on the price and how it runs/drives!

Re: '84 Camaro IROC-Z Conv by ASC...or is it?

I have never seen winglets on an ASC before (the part of the tonneau cover that crossover onto the door). I could be wrong but I have only seen them on thirdgens from "Choo Choo Customs".

This regular "factory conv" '87 built by ASC has the door winglets:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...SS%3AUS%3A1123

The Choo Choo convertibles all seem to be ASC built cars. It seems that Choo Choo contracted to ASC for the convertible conversion.

Re: '84 Camaro IROC-Z Conv by ASC...or is it?

zenish I was wondering if you owned a 87' vert before your 89' cause I bought that car and yes it is an 87' with the vin plate swapped out with an 84' as near as I can tell the car was stollen sometime in the late 80's in oklahoma. Also everything on that car is original except the most important thing the vin plate

I don't know if this is the same car, or one with the same VIN swap problem. I would be scared to buy a car like this.
Car is an '84 IROC-Z with an ASC convertible top.

2nd edit: and wtf is this about

"
A history report is not available for vehicle identification number 00000000000000000.
Possible explanations why the report is not available include:
  • The seller didn't enter the vehicle identification number correctly.
  • The vehicle was manufactured prior 1981.
  • The vehicle didn't have a 17-digit vehicle identification number.
  • The vehicle wasn't intended for the US market (such as limited production exotics)."

its a van nuys car, so its possible that asc could have done it, more then likely though its not even an 84, just has an 84 vin plaque attatched

There are other locations on a car where you can find a VIN. It might be possible to find the original VIN for your car if you look around.

Re: '84 Camaro IROC-Z Conv by ASC...or is it?

Thanks I'm going to look real hard this spring if I can't find anything I have a buddy that is a Michigan state trooper that says we can take it to the state police automobile crime lab but there is a chance that I could lose the car forever because when he did a vin search thru the police department that vin that's on it came Bach clean so he thinks the car was never found and still to this day remains STOLLEN the funny thing is he said if I like the car just leave it alone and enjoy driving it. I'm playin roulette if I want to find out the real vin and the chances aren't good for me more than likely ill loose it

Re: '84 Camaro IROC-Z Conv by ASC...or is it?

Ok,
1) It does not appear to be a VIN swap car as someone suggested. The engine compartment, interior, seats, speedo, dash screams 1984.
2) This is not all that uncommon, you find a wrecked 1987-1992 convertible, then take the parts and pieces off and apply them to an older car... They also took the ground effects from the parts car..

I have thought about doing this (like I really have the time) as with a welder, paint and some creativity I do not think it would be hard to pull off...

In all honesty... I would be more suspect of a stolen car, stripped of its parts, and installed on a 1984. The carcass then discarded.
