vinyl film?

I don't own a convertable, so be kind to me, I don't know all the terminology...

yesterday I was helping a friend primer his vert, and when I was sanding I found a vinyl film on the area in fornt of the trunk. It was in terrible condition, so it had to go.

First of all, what was that?

Second of all, why is it there?

third, when we paint the car, do we need to replace it

Forth, where do we get it?

Here's a picture of the after shots... I think for primer, they turned out great

the first shot is the area I'm talking about

Re: vinyl film?

It is for when the top is up, the tops frame doesn't rub through the body paint.

Re: vinyl film?

jstoltz is the name you are looking for. He has designed and manufactured the strips that you are inquiring about. They are a must to keep the top from rubbing the paint when in the up position. They are very well made and easy to install. I installed a set on my 89rs about a year ago and fit perfect. In this case I don't think bothering him is a problem....

No I didn't read it. First post he was advertising selling it, so I passed the info on to you.

If you do not want to respond to a For Sale post? That is your choice. If there was something in the thread about him that indicated that there were problems with him? It is your call to make.

I did give you the Search criteria I used, so maybe that will help you find another thread that contains the info you want.

Re: vinyl film?

well I did search on ebay, hawks, camaro central, and a few others to see if I could find it. I'm not against buying it from somebody here, but the guy doesn't seem to be on here very much, so I'm not going to recommend him to somebody else.

If they are that hard to get, do most people do without them in a restoration? what's normal?

Re: vinyl film?

I'm talking to a guy now with a vinyl cutting machine. He thinks he has the same material jstoltz was using. GOtta figure out a way to get him dimensions if he cant find a car locally to measure off of. If anyone knows someone with a convertible in Tampa bay, let me know.

Was material? I was looking at my Oracal catalog & saw nothing that would work for this application.

oracal 851
http://www.oracal.com/products/_docs.../Series851.pdf

951 would work as well.. more expensive though, probably not worth it.

I wasn't looking at the standard, thin skins. Only 2 mil. 7510 would be great, 6mil thick, but only comes on fluorescent. 851 is all I ever use for window decals, unless somebody wants fluorescent/metallic/etc.

970RA is double the thickness, 10yr life (like 851) but I don't see Clear listed for 970RA.

751 is only 1 yr less than 851.

2Mil is all we really need. Its not a heavy wear spot, Its there mostly to keep the weatherstrip from sticking to the paint as far as I can tell.

What exactly are these "Little Side Pieces"?

There are two small pieces that go just ahead of the cover. On the post just behind the door

I'd rather go thicker & just do it once. Sign vinyl is not made for wear resistance, so it is not as wear resistant like the material made for this purpose.

but it looks better. I dont know about all Convertible 3rd gen Camaro owners, but I gotta imagine most are not daily drivers nowadays where we are taking the top up and down on a regular basis.

Re: vinyl film?

getting back to one of my original questions... are these things standard on ever convertible restoration, or do some people just do without?

I would not want that weather stripping riding directly on my paint. I guess it depends on how much you value your paint job.

If you can distinguish a 4mil thickness difference, you have some super-vision.

Ans up/down is not where the wear would be occurring, but rather while it is up & driving, as the top shifts.

Sorry 58mark for getting slightly off track. I know vinyl & subjected to the constant rubbing of a top shifting while the top is up is not something I would recommend standard sign vinyl to be used for & certainly not the 2ml stuff.

Re: vinyl film?

cthe ones that were on ebay are gone. sometimes you can find NOS wear stickers (rarely) for around 200$.. I believe that is what modern day muscle had.

the ones that were on my cars are destroyed from the sun, cracking, yellowing. Im not interested in 20 yr old vinyl technology. im looking for more of what they wrap cars with now.

jstoltz was selling new versions, but idont know if he is going to making anymore.

If anyone finds any let me know im still in need.

sounds like there's a market there for somebody else to start offering it... maybe somebody here could provide the service and make a buck at the same time

it's funny, I find this discussion very interesting, and I don't even HAVE a vert!
