So I went to the store yesterday and when I finished my shopping and walked out low and behold there was snow everywhere. I got my IROC to my apartment complex but there are inclines everywhere throughout the property. I didn't make it far before I got stuck and she just wanted to slide sideways. After about 10 minutes of trying to get her to the garage with no avail some neighbors showed up to give me a hand. They were pushing on the trunk of the car getting me to the nearest free parking spot when I heard a loud crack. My spoiler came right off. My heart sunk when I saw that it was just merely glued to posts bolted into the trunk. I know ASC did the conversions but I didn't know they were done so cheaply. The spoiler on my 91 is all one piece and not glued. Are there any aftermarket vert spoilers that are all one piece? Does anyone know what kind of glue is used for the spoiler. I am guessing it was done with a hot glue gun or something. My IROC looks so crappy without the spoiler I want to get it back on as soon as possible. Anyways, just wanted to share my experience and any info on the glue or other products would be greatly appreciated. Thanks fellow third geners.

 

It's a clean thirdgen. The word "crappy" never applies.

 

JB weld works ,sorry about the car spoiler ,fyi on the side of spoiler there a rivet that also attaches to truck lid

 

I tried a few times to fix mine and finally came up with a successful method. I took a piece 3/4 water pipe (PVC type pipe) from the local hardware store and cut it to length and angle to seat against the trunk lid. I took a grinder and roughed up the plastic pedastal so the epoxy could get a good grip. The pipe makes it have enough surface area to adhere and hold.

dang sounds about like whats going on down here in the south one minutes its all clear the next its a blizzard out side.What about the side posts that run from the tonneau cover back to the spoiler mid section. Im having some problems with them but im a little too scared to take them off not know what there is and since vert parts are so hard to find i dont want to break it.

I doubt his had the brackets that attach the sides of the spoiler to the trunk. I think that came in 90 model year.

Your car is 25 years old, things like that will happen. I started leaving some of the GM spoilers on the cars because the posts have become so brittle over time that they crumble if you try to remove them. I'd consider it a blessing that it came apart at a glue joint and not shattered. At least you have something to work with.
Get an epoxy of some sort or try contacting ASC or a body shop to see if you can find out either what was originally used or what they might recommend. If you contact a body shop contact more than one.

 

The sides are easy to get off you have 1 screw in the front 1 in the center and 1 in the rear and the rest is 2 side tape you just need to work that loose from the bottom with a plastic putty knife

 

Thank you all for the advice. My spoiler broke at the glue joints so I got lucky. I think I will try and reglue the spoiler posts back to the spoiler and I also have automotive double sided tape for the bottom inside of the spoiler just under the third brake light. Do you guys think glue would work better than JB weld?, or vice a versa?... I will post some pics just for laughs when I get home this afternoon.

You should be able to take the pieces off the car and sand them with 80 grit sandpaper and the spoiler were they went then mix up fiberglass resin and and reinstall the parts back on the spoiler

 

probably a dumb question but want an ordinary spoiler work if im not mistaken my dads old 90 rs spoiler had the third brake light in it and not in the back glass im just wondering

 

No they are different. Firebird (ASC) on the other hand were stock spoilers cut down (on each end) to intersect with ASC end caps...

 

Yours is a easy fix. Just remove broken pieces off trunk (carefully) and use epoxy to re-attach them...or buy a new one from Hawks for $225 or so. Hang on to that specific third brake light though.

Corner of third brake light where the electrical wires plug in broke a little, I had to bend the prongs back in place. Thank god it will still plug in. shouldn't have any troubles with it disconnecting.

 

The same exact thing happened to my 89 Iroc vert about 20 years ago. I got stuck in my neighborhood and a neighbor helped me out by pushing. It tore the damn center section of same as yours. I used some type of epoxy (can't recall exact as it was a long time ago) to attach the posts back to the spoiler. It worked perfectly and held until I sold it a few years later. Damn I miss that car!

 

two part epoxy from the car parts store fixed mine. Make sure to rough up both parts with some 80 grit sandpaper before gluing. works very well.

 

Used 2 part epoxy from the auto store and new double sided tape, I don't think it will be breaking off again anytime soon. Thank you all for the advice!

 

I tried a few different glues and the two part epoxy along with lightly grinding everything really helped mine. I have tried to break it (within reason) and it is ON THERE. They seem to need a little more surface area to make them more secure that is why I added the water (PVC) pipe to surround the factory pedastals. It adds strength and more surface area against the spoiler and trunk lid. Sorta like going from a 3/8 bolt to a 3/4.
