Trunk lid question - convertible owners
When I pop open my trunk the lid is heavy. I have to push it open and assist it almost all the way open. It will stay open once Its fully open. Then when I close it I have to support it below half way or it will slam shut. I thought the gas lift support struts were bad so I replaced them new today. After I did, it still does the exact same thing. I sprayed some WD on the hinges. While I was reaching in there to spray I noticed there is no spring or anything else other than the struts that support the trunk lid. Is there an adjustment or problem that I need to fix or Is this normal?

Re: Trunk lid question - convertible owners
I take it that this is normal for it to function that way then. So for others, the strut$ shouldn't be replaced unless the trunk won't remain open on its own.

Mine is heavy also. If I am parked on a upward incline I have to hold it up or it will slam shut.
Does anyone know if GM Made the trunk lid and tannaeu cover, or was it an ASC part?

My trunk lid works the same. Once it's up, it says up but you have to hold it so it won't slam shut. I think the trunk may be GM but the tonneau is ASC.

A aluminum decklid would be a welcome addition.

Re: Trunk lid question - convertible owners
Mine has the original SUSPA lift supports. made in 88. 1-27XO-3185A. I contacted SUSPA and was told they have no info and gave me a link to an amazon seller - LOL.
Does anyone have a xref to something autozone or o'rielly carries.
Bosch are toooo expensive.

Re: Trunk lid question - convertible owners
I put new lift supports on mine and the trunk lid stayed up without assistance and shut normal. Since I put the high rise spoiler on the trunk lid will slowly start to close and then slam shut. I bought my supports through AutoZone, the lifetime warranty ones. If you guys are having trouble I would give those a try.

Re: Trunk lid question - convertible owners
A part number would help those without the spoiler. Mine has the spoiler.
I have no clue as to how well they worked when new. Even with specs from the now defunct Stockland shell company I had a heck of a time getting Kragen to find ones with the same size specs that kept the door up.
If even new ones allow the trunk to slam I'll stick with my pvc post.

Re: Trunk lid question - convertible owners
The reply I got from SUSPA, they are disco and no spec info and I doubt anyone else made them so a actual xref is probably nonexistant.
I was given a letter from Steve Garvelink regarding your inquiry into replacement parts for your 1989 Trans Am. I believe the initial response was the result of an incomplete and incorrect part number format. Nevertheless, myself and another engineer recognized that part as ASC P/N: T-27XO-3185-A. This ASC part number is our C16-08355 which we produced from 1986 until 1992 when it was replaced with ASC P/N: W-27X0-3185-AXXX.
The C16-08355 is available but it is classified as a custom part. Custom parts are built to order in the sample department and carry a 2wk lead time. Pricing is as follows:
1pc = $150ea
2-5 pcs = $100ea
6-10pcs = $80ea
11-25pcs = $70ea
26-49pcs = $60ea
