Making those cosmetic air vents on 87 GTA functional

U all know what i'm talking about, just look at my sig pic, u see those air vents on the hood? The 2 in the middle, and one each side of the hood, so 4 total. Well i was thinking, cant i just cut out holes in the hood to allow air to pass? I mean lets face it, these cars get hot, and really as far as air intake, their very restrictive, and if these vents were functional, i'm sure it would help it out some.

What tools would i use?
What problems might i face?
Is it worth it?

Please info on this, cause it crossed my mind today, and i'm itching to tell u guys to see what u think of the idea.

Thanks.

they actually are semi functional. there are smaller holes underneath the front two that lead to the engine bay and the rest of the air is routed through a rough duct to the side vents you mentioned.

the whole thing has a cooling effect on the hood but I think you should seriously think about getting a fibreglass hood if you want to have functional scoops.

Really there are holes underneath? Hmm i gotta check more carefully. So u think it aint worth it anyways, i dont want to do anything big, thats why i mentioned it, i mean i dont want to spend money on this, and if i do, i'm gonna spend it on mods like the ones i wanna get in my sig, not a hood.

I thought i heard somewhere though that they werent functional, but the sides though are not right? U are talking about the small vents on the sides of the hood right? Would those even do anything even if they were open due to where they are located and how they are facing the front of the hood? Or are they open cause u said about a rough duct.

Thanks for reply so far.

I just looked at it more carefully and i did not see any openings. I mean i know there are "little" holes in the vents on the exterior side of the hood, but underneath, there like another sheet of metal, and its all closed. There are like a circle opening here and there about the size of a quarter, but i think those are for other purposes, and besides there not even behind the vents to make a smooth airflow.

So i there cant be any air going in there, now that i think of it, why the hell did GM choke the GTA so much in the front, theres basically no air coming from anywhere but the bottom.

you are right of course -- they are choked up pretty good.

but if you look at the hole where the hood striker is it leads to the "nostrils" on the topside.

likewise if you pop out the side vents on the hood (close to the windshield) you can see that there is a bunch of foam in there blocking the duct inside the hood.

if you look at the underside of the hood with the insulation sheet off for awhile you can see how all the ducts are more are less connected but this is what I reffered to as "rough".

if you really wanted to Im sure you could seal all the holes and things and make the nostrils and side vents do something productive.

i believe the main purpose, or the supposive purpose other then looks, is to keep the hood (paint) cool.

So what your saying is that all that foam stuff layer on the underside of my hood is whats cause the restriction here to those vents. As far as the middle vents, the foam dont block it, in fact its not even in that area. But the side vents u might be right, cause they are mostly blocked from the foam.

Anyways in the end i think GM just made them for looks, if it was for functional reasons, i'm sure they would of designed alot better underside to accomodate those vents.

As far as the hole by the middle vents, i believe its in front of the vents, so i'm sure if air rushed in, that it really wouldnt be productive if the hole was designed to be in front the vent. Air would have to go in, then backwards, the towards the engine again, kinda messed up.

U know it be nice if i can somehow make the middle vents work, and then somehow make them where they direct all the air flow to the "future" cold air induction mod which would be on the left side, (which i;ll be getting soon). That way colder air will get in. I have no idea how id do that though.

U mean cool as in temperature cool, or cool as in it looks great...lol sorry for some reason i dont know which one u mean. I'm leaning towards temperature reasons, since u stated its purpose of looks first.
