no air dam

will this cause the car to overheat?

i know the lower air dam is supposed to keep the air from going underneath the car

im trying to diagnose an overheating problem on my z,
i know the coolant level is fine, and the intake was resealed a while back

next goes the water pump, i guess

Can anyone tell me if the air dam for an 84Z-28 is the same as later model 3rd gen cars ? I look under mine and the dam looks like a mild shaped V made out of something that looks plastic, but at the local car club here I look under a couple of later ones and they look very staight a rubbery. Maybe mine is original and theirs is not? Mine also has a split in the middle of the V. Any help?

I've never needed an air damn, however I seem to be the only one.

I just found out that I don't have one anymore on my car. My car runs around 220 all the time never goes over but it also has a 160* thermo and the fan was changed to come on earlier so I think that is keeping me safe. But I still am getting a dam as soon as I can.

Yeah, I would say get one... when I bought my car it didn't have one on either going down the highway I would run like 220-230 degrees but once I stopped it would redline on the gauge and boil the coolant out.

perhaps that is how the previous owner of my z overheated it, blew out the intake gasket, and pretty much ruined the engine.
the engine still runs, but its got bearing damage, and overheats pretty bad. hopefully i can find one in a junk yard, b/c i think that they are like $60 plus dollars new

the rs i just bought has one on it, and it runs right at 160, but i think im goint to put a 180 stat in it since winter is coming

i thought about making a sticky that had common cooling problems, with the electrical cooling system diagrams too.. but everyones questions would be answered in there and they wouldn't have any reason to post a repetitive question..

but if u guys really think we should, then we can put together a post and make it sticky. we would jjust need to make sure its organized..

The air dam is NOT to keep air from going UNDER the car (in an aerodynamic sense). It's to funnel air INTO THE RADIATOR. The vent in the front facia is for looks. It is almost entirely blocked by the license plate shaped reinforcement behind the vent insert. If you have the Z28 driving lights, then it's nearly completely blocked. The only air the radiator gets is what is directed from under the front chin spoiler, up by the air dam, and into the radiator. Without the air dam, the fan has to do all of the work of pulling the air through the radiator (not so bad if you have dual fans, but bad if you don't). ERGO, make sure you have an air dam.

Sticky for :

1. Air dam
2. Manual fan switch
3. 160* temp switches

Would this kill all posts?

so the entire ram air design on the tech articals section... wouldnt that defeat the purpose of the air dam? if so, then i need to re adjust mine... cau sei hooked the vets from behin dmy fog lights to my dual filter box thing.
