Running too hot....Chip???
Running too hot....Chip???
I have an 88 sport coupe with the stock 305 tbi. i have owned the car for over a year now and other than the cracked radiator when i first got it the car has never overheated one time since the new rad. Being the thrifty spender i am i decided to go and try to find a computer chip for less thatn just buying the hypertech. and i did for 30 bucks from TBIchips.com and the chip definatly gave me a little more power but now when the car has been run for a good half hour or so and then it idles for about 10 minutes the temp gauge is up over 220 and i have a 160 degree stat in it. The car runs great on open roads when alot of air is inducted but when it idles it overheats. So my question is that does anyone have any overheating trouble with the hypertech's or is this kinda a universal ****ty feature of any computer chip other than stock???

hmmm
i just put in probably the same one you did:"tbi chips" i have a stroked 336 formula.... my car just started overheating too!its alright on the highway though....?maybe you should contact brian from his site and ask him for us,eh? curious! brad
my fan is definatly working properly. Also you would think that my new aluminum radiator would also help keep the temp down. I am now convinced that the chip from TBIchips.com is the factor in my overheating issues and Brad...dont you worry i just sent him an email and asked why my camaro with a stock 305 with 50k on it brand new aluminum radiator and properly working fan still manages to overheat excessivly when idling ill post the reply tomorrow...thats if he gets back too me. I am still curious as to if any of you guys running the hypertech chip have problems like Brad and I. Oh another thing Brad my car runs perfect while cruising on the highway until i start hitting stop lights or traffic then thats when the temp really starts cranking up which puts me in the same boat as you.

sounds cool to me!....pardon the pun, though!
...do you have stock exhaust on it too? if so,maybe the eprom is telling the ecm to run too lean or something thus the overheating-- for yours???i have an 80 series flowmaster coupled to it (mine).... ....what im trying to get at....??? just got off of the third shift, sorry!ill watch this space however, bud.--brad

right now the only mods done my car the 88 sc 305 tbi have been a 14 inch open element K&N air filter, I replaced the stock exhaust with 2 1/4 in. straight pipes with thrush turbos(no cats) and a B&M shifter. And this stupid el-cheapo computer chip. He did email me back today and said that it is probably due to the timing being off which all a load of **** because the timing was checked less than a month ago. The exhaust would have no effect on that to back that up i have had the car with the trual dual exhaust on it for nearly a year now and the car ran fine it never even saw a temp over 180 i dont think now all of the sudden it is running at about 140 on the highway and up into the 240-260 in slow moving traffic. So all this information tends to make me believe that the chip you and i purchased is nothing but pure garbage. I sent another email and gave him a piece of my mind so ill keep you posted on what he thinks. Also anyone out there who has purchased a hypertech chip...do you cars overheat as well???---Chris

TBI fans are not controlled by the chip, only tpi. On tbi the fan switch on the passengerside head needs to be changed. Its between the 6&8 plugs. Hypertech or jet make switches for them

Try putting your old chip in and see if eveything runs normal. I ordered a custom made chip from hypertech at the time (4-5 years ago) it was 400.00. Car ran so rich it burned your eyes at an idle and I had more power with the stock chip. They told me story after story of what was wrong with my car. I ordered a chip from another place and car ran fine with lots more power. Hyertech said then that they have to meet gov. standereds and the other place sold me an illegal chip. I did get my money back from Hypertech and will never buy anything from them.
