Car at 160F...good?
Recently installed 180 stat and new hypertech fan switch. Car was not running hot(ter) than normal prior to install. Now the car is at a consistent 160. Just wont heat up more. do i want the car running at this temp? Its a stock 305 tpi. thanks
if it were me i wouldnt run that low, i use a 180 stat and stock dual fan turn on temps with a manual switch hooked up onto the passengers side.
as far as i am concerned that is too low of a temp, for me to run at least.

i am alittle confused, not sure how the car can be running at 160 with a 180 stat.
a 180 stat and the fan being on all the time it shouldnt get under 180, are you sure ur gauage is working fine?

i would keep the 180 stat in. and keep the new fan switch in.
the guage sender should be in the drivers side head, between the 1 and 3 cyclinders.
its hard to take a guess where the temp is at on the stock gauges, i just guess myself most of the time. as long as the guage works, i think you should be fine. if u can ask someone around your place to borrown a scan tool just to see what the computers reads as the temp that would be a good way to ifnd out how close ur guage is at.

I'm kinda' wondering why you changed it if it wasn't running hot?
GM put the 195 in there to reach a wide range (average) climate and driving conditions. Some folks cliimate or habits make this not the ideal temp. But it sounds like in your case you are an example of the 195 being right..... or at least close to it.
Think of the stat as a range (closed.......rating........open) or as 3 temps not one. Your 180 slid this range downward and cooled your engine too much.
I would put the 195 back in. It sounds like it was correct. Then try another method of reducing the temp (adjustable fan relay) to "slightly" reduce the temp if this is what you desire.
Your goal (which is not obtainable) is to run 195 ALL the time so get as close as you can.

I originally put the 180 in because in heavy stop and go traffic the car ran hot consistently. Can I leave the fan switch in and go back to the factory stat?

Sure you can and that's what you should do.
You have 2 choices:
1. Go to a 195 Stat and leave the H/T Switch.
2. Remove the H/T and leave the 180 stat.
The combination of your 2 procedures went from one extreme to the other but the good news is it solved your problem. Changing the stat would seem easier.
If you are unhappy with the results then try the other method.
Still unhappy?
Go to another method like the Derale Adjustable Fan Relay where you can actually vary the kick on temp from 150 to 240. Excellent for fine tuning your cooling system for your own personal driving situation.
