Hot Idle
Ok here is the problem and before I throw more money at it in parts I just want to make sure I am not missing something. Ok I have a 355 motor in my camaro. When I drive it the temp during the day makes a huge difference. but thats not the problem. When it sits at idle it will get hot. 235 sometimes. But when I am driveing around above 30 mph it will sit at 190 and at night 170. This is starting to bother me because I cant even sit at a stop light for a little bit with out it creaping up on me. Whats wrong????? I have a single aftermarket 16 inch electric fan, new air dam, 160 stat, 3 row radiator, and a high flow pump. As I am typing this I just thought of something. Could my low temp stat and high flow water pump let water go through the radiator to fast at idle?? Any ideas would help.

Providing the rad is in good shape--flowing like it should--ETC-- I don't think it would be flowing water too fast as long as U have some kind of t stat in it to slow watwr flow, or U would have overheating in other conditions too. I would guess the one 16" fan is not drawing enough air at idle If it is cooling good at 30 mph and does not need to get up 50+ before it starts cooling good, that kind of points to air flow through rad at low or no speed. Probably why they started putting dual fans on the biggr motors in the later years! I can't honestly say I have ever heard of a 3rd gen car in severe conditions especially with any engine mods that run cool with one 16" fan--most have some type of dual fan setup--factory of aftermarket. Did problem start when 16' fan was installed, or did it start later?
Below is a link for aftermarket fans that may help!

The problem has been like this ever since I installed the 355. I was thinking I needed more fans but didnt want to spend the money if it isnt going to help.

Sounds to me like it's time to do some research and spend some money on fans. My personal fav is 2 12" independant or the flex a lite 200 series--2 12" with built in shrouds.

I'm assuming that your ignition timing is in spec?? Over-advanced timing can cause overheating issues like that (that are less noticable at speed (higher rpm, more air flow))...

You aren't going to flow too much coolant through the radiator to cause cooling problems. Especially at low rpm when the pump is running slow. A slow speed heating problem is almost always a fan issue. Even at 30mph, the air dam is forcing quite a bit of air into the radiator. Removing the rear hood seal helped by around town heating issues greatly.
