engine running hot, will new fan cool it down?

i orriginally had a 305 in my car, it ran about 185, now i have a 350 with a 160 degree thermostat and it runs at 220+, and it runs way better at about 185 i just cant keep it there for very long. i took out my ac condenser that was infront of the radiator, i took out my fog lights and ran some flex hose to the front of the radiator and i even put on a new air dam and it dropped maybe 5 degrees. i have a singly mechanical fan and i was wondering if i could buy a different fan like the ones in summit and will it cool it down to where i need to be or do i need to search the junk yards for a dual fan setup? thanks alot

You could either run an aftermarket mechanical flex fan, or what would work better is to get an electric fan. You don't necessarily need a dual fan setup, just a larg single one that pulls a decent amount of air through the radiator when you stop.

If you could find a nice single factory setup like the one that came with the L69 cars that has curved blades, you could just put a fresh motor on it and it'll blow really good. I replaced the motor and rewired the one in my TA when I swapped engines and man does that thing blow some air now. You can feel it 4 ft. behind the car.

You could also search around and find an aftermarket electric that will work just as good. Problem with aftermarket is the cost, but if it will help it cool better I'd say it's worth it. Chances are with an aftermarket you will probably get some wiring with it too.

i did some looking on ebay and for like 25-35 bucks i can get either a 9 inch or a 10 inch electric fan with all the mounting hardware and everything and its reversible so i could put it on teh fron and push air through also. so maybe one of those, a relay, and a switch and i could just turn it on whenever i need it. what do you think? would it do the trick?

If your talking about keeping the mechanical and using the electric as an auxiliary one, definitely. That will work. That's how my wifes Stang is setup. Works great.

If you want to get rid of the mechanical you can also. Just get a Hypertec 160 fan sensor and acouple relays and you can just run the electric.

If your gonna keep the mechanical fan also then you could get away with the 9 incher. That should help you get a little more air flow.

Well, first of all does your eng. get hot in town or at hwy. speeds? 229*F in town is normal! My stock elect fan (84 Z28 L69) kicks on at 238*F. Check your stat to be sure. Just because it comes in a new box dosn't mean its any good. Drill (4) .180" holes around the stat. I think the 83's only had a two row rad. Get the (3) row rad. I have a 355 in my ride and it run's cool.

He has a mechanical fan which is driven off the engine. There is no electric fan in the car right now. He wants to add an electric one for some extra air flow when it gets hot.

238 degrees is darn hot! That is probably why my fan never came on when my TA was stock. I totally did away with the original fan circuit when I swapped out the L69 because of this. Comes on at 167 now.

If you want to cool the really good, here's what I did:

1. Replaced the stock radiator with an aluminum replacement
2. Installed a hypertec 160 fan sensor
3. Rewired the fan circuit completely. (standalone cricuit)
4. Replaced the fan motor with a Seimens replacement.
5. Used a 181 degree Stant thermostat with two bleed holes drilled.
6. 50/50 Dexcool Coolant/Water

The car will not go over 180-185 even in 100 degree weather at idle or under heavy loads.
