can't keep cool !!!!

If some one can help me at all that would be great. I have a 1988 gta with twin electric fans. I just put a new 350 in, and it will not stay cool in and around town. On the highway it is fine but around town it runs hot. I had the rad flushed when I did the engine, and the fan is turning on. Also my driver display says that I have a problem with the coolant. Help please because I am out of ideas.

Re: can't keep cool !!!!

If it is not the cap, test your 2nd fan (passenger side) to make sure it is operational. Unplug the fan and hook 12V to the connector. It should turn on. If it does not, replace the fan motor.

Is the "problem with your coolant" telling you that it is hot or somehow not full or circulating? Did you properly purge the air from the system when you swapped engines?

Re: can't keep cool !!!!

I'm assuming you replaced the thermostat and hoses when you swapped the engine in. If the cap is ok and the hoses aren't weak/mushy and the thermostat is new and installed correctly, you could also make sure that you have the front air dam still installed and there's nothing blocking the front of the radiator (aka blow out the fins of the radiator).

Re: can't keep cool !!!!

In case somebody else is looking at this I find a simple fix is to drill a 1/16 inch hole in the flange of the thermostat to act as a steam vent helps the block to purge.

Re: can't keep cool !!!!

Check yer cap and also check the manual make sure you have all of the coolant, also kinda seems like you may need a stronger fan..
