What are weep holes for?

My water pump started leaking through this hole and was wondering why they have such a thing in the first place?

Anybody have any ideas?

Well, all water pumps have some type of shaft that is connected to the impeller. There is an internal seal that goes on this impeller shaft that keeps the coolant flowing inside the pump itself. However, when the seal STARTS to go bad, it will slowly allow coolant to drip out so that you know it is leaking and should be replaced. If you don't replace it, after some time the seal will go completely bad and instead of coolant dripping out of the hole, it will come pouring out.

yeap, Seal going bad.

I change the water pump as soon as that happens. Better to change it in the garage than on the highway. The pump will go out, so change it as soon as you can.

From my manuals, the Weep hole is intended to identify wear, if it serves any other purpose, it was not listed. The same thing happened in my first 88 Deville I bought early in 04. I abandoned the car at the impound but kept the new water pump and gasket.. Gonna use it on the second 88 I bought that HAS a title. Anyway, explain that pic... looks REAL bad! hehehe

I helps protect the pump bearing too. If you don't have a weep hole the coolant would eventually make it to the pump's main bearing just in front of the weep hole cavity, then all the grease gets washed out and you end up with a very noisy leaking pump.
