My fan used to come on as soon as I turned the ignition to "on" so I thought the fan was wired to the ignition. However, today while I was in stop and go traffic I watched my temp gauge slowly rise until it hit 260* and then I pulled over and turned her off. As soon as I turned it off I heard some nasty noises coming from the engine compartment. I raised the hood and the water was almost to the top of the overflow tank.

Well, the fan was not coming on, and now it only comes on when I turn on the AC. Think maybe a bad fan switch or relay? Do you think my engine was hurt going to 260*???

 

I'm gonna guess that the fan switch is bad since it still comes on with the AC.

 

i dont think your engine is hurt, not inless you drove it like that for awhile but if you said that you just pulled over really quick then your fine. but go get that fixed, traffic is getting worse everyday!!!

 

Yeah, I work in D.C. so I am very familiar with traffic. It might have been at 260* for a couple minutes, but then I pulled over when I saw it wasn't going down. So hopefully my L03 has not been damaged!

 

yeah it should be fine. I hate traffic, so i bought a little civic so my camaro can stay at home where it belongs till the weekend

 

My girlfriend's parents just brought down her '88 with a 2.8 V6. This is the first one I've ever been with (camaro not girlfriend). It typically runs from 220-250. I turn on the heat when it hits 250 and that brings it right back down. From what I'm reading, that appears to be higher than normal. Is that correct?

Unfortunately since I live in FL, the heat thing is only going to work for so long. Also, how much damage will I be causing if I run it at the 230-240 range for 30 minutes?

Like I said, I'm new to camaros.

 

well first check to see if the fan turns on. if it does then i would go ahead and change the coolant and the thermostat too with a 185 degree one. basic instructions. GOOD LUCK!!!

 

I live close the the D.C area...i live in springfield...the traffic is terrible, ive watched my temp climb to 230ish and like you said my overflow tank was full and make noises.

Sence then all ive done is replace the thermostat to 180* and flushed the coolant. (and no this didnt fix the problem and i knew it wouldnt anyway but it needed to be done)

Manual Fan Switch is going in sometime in the next month.

Not putting up with the stock fan bull**** coming on at like 220-230 whatever it is.

 

how come you wont put a fan switch in there,from JetPerformance? they make your fan come on from 200-195 degrees. thats what im going to get.

 

ya, thought about that too i guess itd be easier then wiring a custom switch all the way through the firewall and mounting it.

though the JET switch i looked at on summit was like 39$

replacing the switch has got to be pretty straightforward right...?

 

yeah it is straight forward, the only thing is that you have to drain the coolant first then you can pull it out or you going to take a shower in it. LOL!!! but it is easy. I havent did it yet but it looks simple. oh you have yo cut your old connecter so you can tie into the new one they give you.
